Net Zero Carbon

Formula E - the first sport with certified net zero carbon footprint from inception

Chile

CHILE

In central Chile, Formula E has invested in two separate landfill gas projects, at Municipal Solid Waste sites located north of Santiago de Chile metropolitan area.

Serving a population of approximately 1.2 Million people, the sites receive significant amounts of waste and as this waste degrades, they emit large quantities of landfill gases (methane and carbon) into the atmosphere. Beyond the contribution to global emissions, there are localised impacts of poorly managed landfill sites, including high risk of fire and explosion, bad odours and high levels of air pollution.

LOS COLORADOS LANDFILL GAS

The Los Colorados project captures and converts the methane gas produced by the landfill to be used in generators to produce electricity and improves site safety through capturing and flaring of additional gases.

Accordingly, the site is now considered to be the biggest and most modernised landfill operation in Chile. 90% of the waste is delivered to the site via rail access, which provides an additional reduction in the total operating emissions by reducing the number of lorries transporting waste via the road network.

In total, this project saves around 1,317,418 tonnes of CO2 per year and contributes directly to 5 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (3, 7, 9, 11, 13)..

SANTA MARTA LANDFILL GAS

The Santa Marta landfill site is one of the most important for the region. The project, contributed to by Formula E, uses state of the art gas collection technology to produce renewable, clean energy. The energy produced at the site is used to power the landfill and the excess is delivered directly to the national grid.

The global benefits of the project are twofold; emissions are reduced directly though the reduction of emitted methane (which has a footprint 21 times greater than CO2!) and through the generation of renewable energy it replaces the emissions that would have otherwise been produced through burning fossil fuels.

This leads to an approximate saving of 348,323 tonnes of CO2 per year and the project contributes directly to 6 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 13)..
