LANDFILL GAS
USA

SOUTH CAROLINA

At a Municipal Solid Waste landfill site in South Carolina, a verified carbon standard (VCS) project is working to reduce the quantity and impact of harmful landfill gas emissions.

The project here has three broad arms covering; the expansion of existing systems for landfill gas collection and destruction, the redirection of landfill gas for use in natural gas boiler equipment and the use of the landfill gas to generate electricity.

Across all three arms this project reduces global CO2 emissions by 75,977 tonnes per year. The benefits of this project are also realised closer to home, where the emissions have previously had a harmful impact on the local environment and society.

This project contributes to 5 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (3, 7, 9, 11, 13).
