A new Dutch chapter: Zandvoort welcomes Formula E's GEN4 era

Formula E prepares to write a new chapter in the history books of an icon circuit, as the championship heads to Zandvoort in 2027.

The 2026/27 Formula E season welcomes three new tracks to the calendar: Circuit of the Americas (COTA), Brands Hatch and the MASCOT Zandvoort Circuit.

All three tracks have a rich motorsport history and distinct personalities, making them perfect destinations for the GEN4’s debut season.

SEASON 13 CALENDAR: Where will Formula E be racing in 2026/27

Set near the Dutch coastline, and just outside of Amsterdam, the MASCOT Zandvoort Circuit is a traditional old-school track. Having officially opened in 1948, the circuit hosted its first Formula 1 race in 1952, quickly becoming a driver favourite, thanks to its extreme 18-degree bankings, blind elevation changes and high-speed overtaking opportunities.

Throughout the decades, legends have won and lost here, from Ferrari’s Alberto Ascari, who won the first Formula 1 race at Zandvoort in 1952, to Jim Clark, Jacky Ickx, Nicki Lauda - and most recently, four-time world champion Max Verstappen who won the Dutch Grand Prix three times between 2021 and 2023.

And now it’s the turn of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to open a new chapter in the history books of this fabled circuit. In 2027, for the first time ever, Formula E will race in the Netherlands, but even as far back as Season 2 (2015/16) this picturesque European nation has had its fingerprints on the all-electric championship, with two Dutch drivers making their mark.

Robin Frijns joined Formula E in 2015, making his debut at the Beijing E-Prix with the Andretti outfit, immediately making an impact by achieving a podium in only his second race. Frijns would go on to have a long and successful Formula E career, competing in nine seasons and accumulating two race wins and 14 podiums.

Fellow Dutchman, Nyck de Vries, would join him in the paddock in 2019, ahead of Season 6. Fresh off his FIA Formula 2 championship title, de Vries raced with the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team for three seasons, winning the series’ first official FIA World Championship at the end of 2020/21. Following a brief stint in Formula 1, he returned to Formula E ahead of the 2023/24 season, this time representing Mahindra Racing.

The arrival of the MASCOT Zandvoort Circuit on the Formula E calendar isn’t simply the arrival of the championship in a country with such a rich sporting history, it’s also an opportunity to take the brand-new GEN4 to one of the most exciting circuits in the world, a circuit that is uncompromising and always delivers great racing.
