Evans disappointed despite points haul in Marrakesh

Evans disappointed despite points haul in Marrakesh

Lining up sixth on the grid after making it through to the Quarterfinals in Qualifying in Marrakesh, Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans battled through the pack to make it onto the podium in the Red City. Yet despite the points haul the championship challenger left Morocco disappointed.

"I lost a lot of ground in the first lap,” admitted Jaguar’s Mitch Evans moments after the race, which saw him battle his way up three positions to a podium finish in the in the baking heat of the Saharan sun. “Pascal [Wehrlein] was suffering from something and he was defending really aggressively – dangerously, I would say. I lost ground to the front guys, so I cleared him but burn up a little bit of energy and tyres to catch them up. Then I just was making my way through the pack,” he explained.

Recovering from his “compromised start,” the Kiwi focused on his race and aimed for the front runners, eager to build on what has been a hugely successful season for the Jaguar frontman. Once back in the running, Evans managed the car’s battery temperature and energy with the help of his team to get him into fourth place.

Recovering from his “compromised start,” the Kiwi focused on his race and aimed for the front runners, eager to build on what has been a hugely successful season for the Jaguar frontman. Once back in the running, Evans managed the car’s battery temperature and energy with the help of his team to get him into fourth place.

“I was able to focus getting on to the front few guys but I just lacked a little bit of pace today,” he revealed. “I was sort of settled for fourth, and then obviously JEV ran into issues, so I sniffed a bit of blood, and obviously wanted to capitalise on that. I'll definitely take third after starting from sixth,” he said with a smile.

Celebrating his fourth podium finish of the season, the Kiwi heads to the next race in New York in good standing. Holding on to his fourth place in the championship with a total of 124 points – just 15 points behind the leader, Edoardo Mortara (ROKiT Venturi Racing), Evans remains a strong championship contender.

“All in all, it was a strong race today. We just lacked a little bit compared to these guys over one lap and in the race,” said Evans in the post-race press conference. “The key today was to try and win but if you can’t do that, then you want to try and score big points and that's exactly what we did.

Historically, New York has favourable to the Jaguar squad, in particular Evans’ teammate, Sam Bird, who’s found himself on the podium in Brooklyn three times, while Evans has managed it only once in 2019.

“These guys operate at a very high level,” he said, referring to the rest of the grid. “Every time I get a good result they seem to as well, so to catch up is not easy. We're going to have to be on our A-game to keep in the championship fight, but I have full confidence in the package I've got and the team, so we’ll keep at it."
