There’s a mountain of expectation that comes with joining a team as iconic and historic as Porsche, and time and time again we’ve seen drivers crumble under the weight of such pressure. But in only his third race with the German manufacturer, Nico Müller has already made a strong opening statement to his critics.
HANKOOK DEBRIEF: Five things we learned in Miami
At the Miami E-Prix, his 64th race start in Formula E, the Swiss driver secured his first Julius Baer Pole Position. Battling rookie Felipe Drugovich (Andretti), with a guaranteed new pole sitter from their Final Duel, it was Müller who got the better lap together.
However, before Müller could even take his grid position at the lead of the 20-car field, the skies above the Sunshine State darkened and the rain started pouring. Despite the tricky conditions, Müller looked in control, making no mistakes, and trading the lead with the cars around him. At the end of Lap 27, Mitch Evans sold Müller the dummy to steal the race lead through the final couple of corners - a move that would prove race winning for the Kiwi.
Müller finished the race in second, just over two seconds behind the Jaguar. Even though he was unable to convert his maiden pole position into a race win, the Porsche driver took away plenty of positives (and crucial championship points) from his time stateside.

“It was a very good feeling (achieving pole position), to be honest,” says Müller. “And a big relief as well to prove it to myself mainly rather than anything else.
“In Formula E, I think pole position is much more rewarding than in other championships, because you have to prove yourself through all those phases of qualifying and the challenges are very different from group qualifying to the Duels. So, to get that under our belt and score three important points for the team as well was really good, and then to top it off with a podium in very different conditions is also anything but a given.”
The dramatic change in conditions between qualifying and the race caught many teams off guard, and left drivers and engineers scrambling to rethink and revise their strategies for the E-Prix.
“You just think about, what can we do to make sure our package is performing in these conditions,” he explains. “That goes from set up, to pressures, to strategy, to how you use your energy, so not much different to the dry. It's always a bit of a guessing game which makes it even more important to exchange openly with all your engineers.
“I have full trust in our Porsche guys, they’ve proven so many times that they know how to handle these situations and they’ve done it again today. Getting both cars on the podium is a big statement, I’m just pleased and happy for them.”
A big statement indeed. Following their double podium weekend, Porsche now leads both the Teams’ and Manufacturers’ standings, with a growing margin to the rest of the field.
“It’s a huge honour to represent Porsche in an official FIA World Championship,” Müller says. “And I’m soaking in every moment and enjoying the work. It’s a pleasure working with these boys and girls and I can’t wait for Jeddah.”
