Mortara returns to the podium at Formula E's 150th race

Could this be the start of a promising year for Edoardo Mortara and Mahindra Racing?

Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara is no stranger to making history in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, having been the victor at both Formula E’s 50th and 100th race. However, despite pushing Citroën’s Nick Cassidy right to the chequered flag, he wasn’t able to achieve the same feat at the championship’s 150th race celebrations in Mexico City.

REPORT: Nick Cassidy secures Citroën's first Formula E win in Mexico City

“It was extremely stressful, especially the last ten to fifteen laps,” Mortara said. “I think it was about the middle of the race when I started to struggle with a few things on my car and Nick (Cassidy) had managed to create a gap when he was in ATTACK MODE, so we had to spend quite a lot of energy to close that gap and I was left with less energy than the others in the end which is never really ideal.”

Mortara had flown under the radar in Free Practice 1 and 2, putting in respectable times, but failing to challenge the rapid pace of the Porsche and Stellantis powered cars. It was in Saturday's Qualifying session where the Mahindra really came alive, and the Swiss driver took advantage of multiple frontrunners failing to make it through the Duels. Mortara ultimately qualified for the race in third, missing out to DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard in the semi-finals.

The race was a different challenge entirely, with a late race Safety Car changing the fortunes of drivers up and down the grid. Mortara had been in contention for the victory for most of the race, even leading the field at various stages, and luckily for the Mahindra driver, his calm demeanour and advantageous ATTACK MODE strategy found him in a prime position alongside Cassidy for the final laps of the E-Prix.

“I was lucky to have the ATTACK MODE which is helpful with traction and fighting the others,” he said. “But I can tell you that the last lap was not fun, and I had Oli (Rowland) behind me, who you know is always pretty fiesty, looking to overtake me, so it wasn’t so nice. But in the end we managed to stay in front and get P2.”

Achieving his and Mahindra Racing’s first podium of Season 12 and claiming the 18 points that come with it leave Mortara fifth in the championship, and with six drivers from six different teams heading the standings, ABB Formula E has never been more competitive.
