HANKOOK DEBRIEF: Five things we learned in Mexico City

Championship Journalist Katy Fairman has picked her five biggest talking points from the second round of Season 12 in Mexico City.

The 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix marked a historic milestone as the 150th race in Formula E history. Hosted at the historic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the race saw a masterclass of energy management from Nick Cassidy to claim a first victory for Citroën Racing in single-seater motorsport.

Citroën’s stunning start

After hitting the ground running in Sao Paulo with a podium, thanks to Nick Cassidy, Citroën Racing are now race-winners in just their second Formula E race. It’s a statistic that makes them the 20th unique brand to lift the winners’ trophy in the all-electric championship’s history.

Although there’s no denying Citroën’s winning ways across several motorsport championships, this is a remarkable achievement so early into their Formula E journey and sees them lead the Teams’ World Championship on 44 points after just two rounds.

How Citroën Racing are making history in the Formula E World Championship

Their qualifying still needs some work, with Cassidy starting 13th and teammate Jean-Eric Vergne in 18th after receiving a three-place grid drop for overspeeding under a FCY in Sao Paulo. However, Cassidy said there was that pace in the car and if they can nail that going forward they’ll be a real threat to the rest of the grid, despite this being their debut season.

Cass back on top

Since making the switch to Citroën for Season 12, Nick Cassidy has proved that he’s one of the best on the Formula E grid after securing his fourth race win in five races. It’s a seriously impressive statistic, with the Kiwi winning all three consecutive races at the end of Season 11 with the Jaguar TCS Racing team.

Now with Citroën, Cassidy has had to relearn a whole new powertrain on his way to two podiums; both as a result of excellent climbs up the grid. It’s no secret that Nick is quick, he continues the statistic of highest percentage record of race starts to victories as well as cementing his 12th career victory – placing him equal fourth on the all-time winners list and just two off the top spot of Mitch Evans (Jaguar) and Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT) on 14.

Qualifying in 13th, Cassidy saved energy when it mattered and remained patient before gambling on a longer six minute ATTACK MODE to swoop through the pack and find himself fighting out front as the race began to draw to a close. Despite having Edoardo Mortara on his tail, and a battle for third emerging behind involving Oliver Rowland (Nissan), Taylor Barnard (DS PENSKE) and Jake Dennis (Andretti), Cassidy kept his cool to cross the line with just a 0.6s gap behind.

Points for Pepe

It wasn’t the debut Pepe Martí wanted in Sao Paulo, after causing a collision during the FCY and ending his race in dramatic fashion. He received a hefty sanction for his mistake, and started the Mexico City E-Prix at the back of the grid and an additional penalty that needed to be served through the pit lane at the start of the race.

This placed him at the back of the grid and a long way behind the pack, with the stadium section showing their full support for the Spaniard as he tried to catch up to the grid on-track. However, a FCY which then became a Safety Car meant that Martí was then able to close the gap and actually get racing.

What followed was a great strategy and Martí finishing seventh and in the points – his first in Formula E. It was a great display from the rookie, and showed his adaptability making the switch to Formula E.

Hero to Zero for Buemi

Sebastien Buemi started his Mexico City race day with his 17th Julius Baer Pole Position in Formula E, equalling the most poles by a driver in the championship’s history – a record now shared with Jean-Eric Vergne. Ahead of the 150th Formula E race, it was an amazing achievement to have someone who started that very first race in Beijing in 2014 still fighting at the front.

With Taylor Barnard losing pole for a track limits violation, it was Buemi who started from the P1 slot and found himself ahead as the grid approached Turn 1. However, Buemi locked up and went straight on at the first corner, dropping himself to almost the back of the pack.

He managed a great recovery drive to find himself in sixth at one point, before a puncture and front wing damage forced him to pit twice.

Another Mexican masterclass

As well as being Formula E’s 150th race, Mexico City continues to give fans – both on the ground and at home – heaps of entertainment. From a tight battle in qualifying with big names failing to make it through to the Duels, to five drivers all fighting for the win as we went into the last corner, it was another great race weekend.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez has been a staple on the Formula E calendar for the last decade, and the passion and energy from the fans makes it one of the most unmissable events from motorsport’s racing calendar.
