Season 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship kickstarted in São Paulo last month, with four drivers picking up penalties from the opening round. As they get ready to race in Mexico City on Saturday 10 January, here’s a reminder of those penalties.

Pepe Martí

Reason: Causing a collision
Penalty: Start from the back of the Grid

“[Pepe Martí] caused a collision with [Antonio Felix da Costa] and [Nico Müller] at Turn 6-7. When Race Control deployed the FCY, [da Costa] and [Müller] reacted correctly by reducing their speed during the countdown and selecting different lines to avoid a collision. [Martí], however, arrived at the scene too quickly and was unable to react in time to prevent an impact. Because this represents a worst-case scenario in terms of safety, the Stewards have decided to impose a severe penalty.”

4 penalty points were awarded, 4 in total.

Lucas di Grassi

Reason: Causing a collision
Penalty: Drop of 5 grid positions

"[Lucas di Grassi] caused a collision with [Edoardo Mortara] at Turn 5-6. [di Grassi] pushed [Mortara] to the wall which ended in a retirement for car 48."

2 penalty points awarded, 6 in total.

Felipe Drugovich

Reason: Overtaking under FCY
Penalty:  3-place grid drop

“[Felipe Drugovich] overtook [Pascal Wehrlein] and [Nick Cassidy] during a FCY. 5 second time penalty converted into a drop of 3 grid positions for the next race in which the driver takes part.”

2 penalty points awarded, 3 in total.

Jean-Eric Vergne

Reason: Overspeeding under FCY
Penalty: 3-place grid drop

“[Jean-Eric Vergne] exceeded the FCY speed limit between T6 and T7. 5 second time penalty converted into a drop of 3 grid positions for the next race in which the driver takes part.”

1 penalty point awarded, 2 in total.
