Well, what a year its been for the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. In the past 12 months, we've held ten races in nine cities over four continents, launched a new Gen2 car, witnessed countless spins and saves, seen dreams made and championship hopes smashed to pieces, crowned a champion, raced a falcon and seen a new era of all-electric racing take shape in Saudi Arabia.
In short, it's been our very best year yet and the best news is - we're just getting started. So sit back, start the celebrations and join us for a countdown of Formula E's finest moments of 2018. It's been a pleasure.
10. Orlando Bloom bins it in Marrakesh
9. Formula E brings racing back to Switzerland
8. Perfect race for hometown hero
After clinching his first ever Formula E win in Mexico City earlier in the year, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler's Daniel Abt stormed to victory during his home race in Berlin picking up all possible points during the race day. "It feels like a dream," said the bewildered German driver, fresh off the poidum. "To win a home race has always been on my checklist and to finally do it with the one-two finish and maximum points is crazy - it still feels a bit unreal - I loved every second."
7. ISO20121 - Racing for the future
6. Gen2 breaks cover in Geneva
5. Taking Jaguar's I-Pace on an epic road trip through Portugal
With Panasonic Jaguar Racing celebrating the launch of it's first ever road-going electric car - the I-Pace - as well as the first official Formula E support series in the form of the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy, we thought we'd see what all the fuss was about and take the I-Pace on an epic drive through Portugal. Encountering everything from motorways to mountains, we found the plucky I-Pace was more than capable of brushing off a 300km road trip around the Algarve. See how we got on here.
4. Formula E vs Falcon
After we pitched Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne against a real life Cheetah last year, it was about time we cranked it up and set the Gen2 car against the animal kingdom once again. This time, we sent Venturi's Felipe Massa deep into the desert to race the fastest animal on the planet: the mighty peregrine falcon.
3. JEV crowned champion
For reigning champion Jean-Eric Vergne, the 2017/18 season will take some beating. Rounding off his fourth season in Formula E with 198 points, six podiums and not a single retirement, the charismatic Frenchman clinched the championship title in the penultimate race of the season in New York City back in July. "Honestly, when I first came into Formula E, I never thought I'd be here. I don't remember who I was but I was far from what I am today," said Vergne moments after his win.
2. Audi's miraculous comeback
Despite a disastrous start to the 2017/18 season with a disqualification for Daniel Abt in Hong Kong and ongoing technical issues for Lucas di Grassi, Team Principal Allan McNish led the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler team to the teams' championship title in New York City after one of the best comebacks in the history of Formula E. With the team's frontman Lucas di Grassi having scored a grand total of zero points up until Round 5 of the championship, it looked near impossible for the team to finish in the top five, let alone first. But Audi proved miracles can happen. "To be honest, that was one of the best fightbacks of my career," admitted McNish in New York. "It feels superb, it feels absolutely superb."
1. Jandre’s kiss
Now, the moment you've all been waiting for - our number one moment of 2018 is (drum roll, please)... Jandre's kiss. Despite the two drivers' (JEV + Andre = 'Jandre') bromance blossoming over the course of the season, we're referring to the epic moment the two Techeetah drivers' cars made contact on the circuit in Santiago, moments before brining home the series' first ever one-two finish. Bravo, boys - that's some risky race strategy but it sure paid off.
With another epic year of Formula E goodness over and out, there's plenty more to look forward as a brand new era of all-electric street racing begins to take shape in 2019. With new cars, new drivers, new city street circuits and new rules the 2018/19 season of Formula E promises more close-combat racing action than ever before. Buckle up, we're just getting started...
