Wehrlein opens the Valencia pre-season test on top

The first day of testing saw three hours and some rapid times set from the outset as Pascal Wehrlein powered the Porsche to the top of the timesheets.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returned to action after a short break as the field started pre-season testing at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain. There were changes across the grid, but the same names were on top.

It was a perfect start for Porsche, as Pascal Wehrlein powered to the top of the timesheets. The German set a new Formula E lap record around the Spanish circuit with a 1:21.714, and an impressive gap back to second as the Season 10 champion was two tenths quicker than second-placed Nyck de Vries (Mahindra).

De Vries also had a turn at the top of the timesheets in the final hour of testing, and he has Mahindra teammate Edoardo Mortara for company in the top five. A good start for the Indian manufacturer after the pair both returned Mahindra to the podium last season.

Andretti's Jake Dennis was third, the Brit who took his first Formula E victory at the circuit back in Season 7, ended the day splitting the Mahindra pair.

Reigning champion Oliver Rowland ended the session in fifth, the Nissan driver laying down an impressive marker on used tyres at the end of the three hours.

Jaguar TCS Racing has gone through some changes in the off-season. The British manufacturer has a new leader in the shape of former McLaren team principal Ian James. He's not the only recruit, as Antonio Felix da Costa joined the team, and the Portuguese former champion immediately got to work, setting the sixth fastest time and finishing above teammate Mitch Evans.

There was another flash of red around the Spanish circuit, as the French tricolore of Citroën Racing got to work, as the manufacturer partners with the MSG Racing outfit. They were also immediately up-to-speed, but to be expected from a race-winning package, as drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and Nick Cassidy finished in ninth and tenth, respectively.

There were a couple of off-track excursions in the three-hour session, the most notable being Taylor Barnard in his first appearance in the black and gold of DS PENSKE. The young Brit made it back out after being sidelined for the majority of the session.

Joel Eriksson was the quickest of the newcomers, the Envision Racing recruit ending the first test session in 17th, with Felipe Drugovich (Andretti) and Pepe Marti (CUPRA KIRO) rounding out the field.
