The Julius Baer Pole Position was the last box to be ticked for CUPRA KIRO and Ticktum, who have had an incredible Season 11 following fresh investment ahead of the GEN3 Evo era. Ticktum picked up his first podium in Japan, followed by a debut win in Jakarta and now can take home a pole position trophy too.
Unfortunately he won’t benefit from the pole position grid slot, and instead Nick Cassidy (Jaguar) will be on the front row alongside DS PENSKE’s Maximilian Guenther. Mitch Evans lines up third, followed by yesterday’s podium finishers Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche) and Nyck de Vries (Mahindra Racing).
Final
Cassidy made his way into the Final of a Duel for the first time since exactly a year ago here in London, where he took pole but today it was Ticktum’s turn. The British driver has made it into three finals but never won, however today he put on a fantastic lap against Cassidy to take the pole and three points.
However, a five-place penalty for an incident involving Ticktum and Evans yesterday means he will start sixth. Ticktum’s team has only taken two previous Formula E poles, thanks to Nelson Piquet Jr in Hong Kong in 2016, and Oliver Turvey at Mexico City in 2017.
Semi Finals
It was a Jaguar battle for the first Semi, and despite a mistake for Cassidy as he approached Turn 16 he still came out ahead, later calling it “the worst lap he’s done in this building”. Evans was given instructions to slow down to help Cassidy reach the finale. “You backed off enough” Evans was told at the flag.
Ticktum sailed through to the final, going up against Guenther. The DS PENSKE driver has reached the Duel finals twice this season, and taken pole both times in Jeddah and Shanghai but it wasn’t to be today. Instead it was the CUPRA KIRO of Ticktum who made his third Duel Final of the season.
Quarter Final
First was de Vries and Evans, which was a repeat of yesterday’s final Duel which was won by Evans as he secured pole. Until yesterday, Evans had not won a single Duel this season but beat de Vries again to proceed into the Semis.
It was an easy win for Cassidy, as Mortara struggled with a brake by wire issue which instantly lost him the Duel. It was a disappointment for Mahindra, as this was also the first time Mortara topped a qualifying group all season.
An all-German Duel followed, with Guenther against Wehrlein. It was a record-extending 38th time in the Duels for Wehrlein, who has won eighth of the nine Quarter Final Duels across Season 11.
Last up was Ticktum and Vandoorne, and it was the Brit who went into the Semis with the quickest ime of the Quarter Finals. Ticktum now has eight Duel appearances this season, which is as many as he took in the rest of his Formula E career combined.
Group A
The session was brought under red flag conditions early on after a technical stoppage for Antonio Felix da Costa, with the Season 6 champ jumping out the car and helping push it out of harm's way.
When the session resumed, it was Mortara who was quickest in his group closely followed by teammate de Vries. Third and fourth place was also taken by two members of the same team, Jaguar TCS Racing. Mitch Evans secured third, with yesterday’s race winner Cassidy fourth.
Newly-crowned world champion Oliver Rowland missed out on the Duels for the second race in a row, making the challenge of securing the teams’ and manufacturers’ titles for Nissan an even harder challenge today.
Group B
Dan Ticktum was quickest in his group, followed by Maximilian Guenther a tenth behind. He was joined by Pascal Wehrlein, who complained of a puncture during the session, and Vandoorne who has looked quick across today so far.
Barnard had another challenging session, and finished sixth in his group.
