Formula E returns to London and the unique half indoor-outdoor ExCeL Arena. It’s a race track like no other, and always provides us with entertainment, the perfect place for a showstopper finale.
Here’s all you can expect from Rounds 15 and 16 of Season 11.
Titles still to be decided
Oliver Rowland might have secured the drivers’ World Championship in Berlin, but there’s still two trophies to be won this weekend. Both the Teams’ and Manufacturers' honours are up for grabs in the last two rounds, with TAG Heuer Porsche and Nissan the two favourites.
INTERVIEW: Rowland on his emotional World Championship victory in Season 11
Porsche currently lead both title fights, but Nissan aren’t far behind thanks to Rowland’s incredible efforts this season and a brilliant debut for NEOM McLaren’s Taylor Barnard.
In the teams’ battle, Porsche lead on 228 points with Nissan in their shadow with 205 points. The German manufacturer has had a mixed year, as both Antonio Felix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein fought for their second respective drivers’ championships. Across Season 11 they’ve managed nine podiums, with a win for Wehrlein in Miami, and three Julius Baer Pole Positions.
For Nissan, Rowland is their golden boy having earned 184 of their 205 points. His impressive season hasn’t been mirrored by his teammate Norman Nato, who sits 19th in the drivers’ standings. Missing Berlin due to other work commitments, Nato secured pole in Miami with a best result of sixth this year.
In the Manufacturers' title, the first official year of this FIA-recognised award, Porsche also lead the way thanks to the efforts of Porsche and their customer teams Andretti and CUPRA KIRO. Nissan are in the same position in second, with the help of McLaren boosting their chances.
Can Nissan flip things around in London to secure all three awards?
There’s no other circuit like the ExCeL
Situated in the capital of the United Kingdom, the London ExCeL Circuit offers a unique challenge with its blend of indoor and outdoor sections. We’ve raced here for years now, but it still never gets old.
The track begins indoors on a smooth coated surface, providing excellent grip for the drivers, but after navigating a quick succession of corners, the pack heads outside, immediately encountering a strip of slippery metal before transitioning to the highly abrasive asphalt surrounding the exhibition centre.
It’s a dramatic change for the drivers, made all the more difficult if it rains – which it certainly has done.
The outdoor portion of the circuit features a flowing set of chicanes, perfect for passing opportunities. Following the chicanes, drivers face a quick run down to a twisty set of curves before heading back up into the main hall to complete the lap.
This transition from indoors to outdoors introduces changes in surface and elevation, as well as a shift in lighting, making it a challenging yet thrilling experience for the drivers.
McLaren’s last dance
After announcing their departure from the all-electric championship earlier this season, this will be the final two races for the NEOM McLaren team. It’s been an incredible run in Formula E, with the team achieving eight podiums and a win since they took over from Mercedes ahead of GEN3.
Their drivers Sam Bird and Taylor Barnard are still to confirm their next steps, and whether they’ve found drives anywhere else on the grid.
Known for their vibrant papaya livery, the team will be opting for a new look in London with a special one-off look developed in collaboration between Oxagon, NEOM’s reimagined industrial city and the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team. Their blue “away kit” also transfers to their race suits, which will also be blue over the two London events.
This season the team has totalled up five podiums, all thanks to rookie sensation Barnard, who has also collected two pole positions along the way. Last year Sam Bird also completed one of the most ambitious and exciting overtakes in the championship’s history to take McLaren’s first win in Formula E.
Both Bird and Barnard will be hoping that they can end their time with the team with a victory in front of their – and the teams – home crowd.
PIT BOOST is back
PIT BOOST - powered by Formula E's Official PIT BOOST Provider Fortescue Zero - is an innovative and mandatory mid-race feature that sees cars given a 10% energy increase (3.85kWh) through a 30-second, 600kW boost in the pit lane. It will be used during one of the two races across a double-header.
All drivers must stop during the race for this extra energy, however each team is only provided one PIT BOOST rig which prevents them from doing any double-stacking. This will also create plenty of drama and excitement, as each competitor navigates an additional element of race strategy and could potentially alter race outcomes and tactics.
In London, drivers must take the PIT BOOST when their State of Charge (SoC) is below 60% and above 40% at the moment of the boost. The timing of this could vary from garage to garage depending on the strategy of consumption each driver has during the first phase of the race.
