Mortara marks return to the podium with second in Jakarta

Edoardo Mortara returned to the podium for the first time since the 2023 season finale in Seoul. While the result was rewarding, the Mahindra driver admitted he felt there was more on the table in Jakarta.

Starting from sixth, just behind the eventual race winner Dan Ticktum, Mortara steadily climbed through the field as early race leaders Jake Dennis and Nyck De Vries suffered setbacks.

The Swiss driver stayed within striking distance of Ticktum through the final four laps but was unable to maximise his final ATTACK MODE and settled for second, just 0.371s behind. However, the result marked Mahindra's second podium of the season and helped the team climb to fifth in the Teams' World Championship with a total of 121 points.

"I felt really happy, it's been a long time coming," Mortara said. "There were several occasions where I felt that we got a little bit unlucky, like Tokyo in the rain, where ATTACK MODE didn't work. Even here in Jakarta, two years ago when I was running in the top three but it's in the past and I'm happy to come back on the podium for Mahindra.

"Right from the start of the year, we're showing more and more performance, and this weekend we're really, really good. It's a shame that we only have one race here, I would have hoped to have a second one."

Despite the challenges, Mortara is enjoying his strongest campaign since finishing third in Season 8. While he's been consistently finishing in the top five, he has opened up about the behind-the-scenes work and ongoing challenges at Mahindra that have been crucial to bringing him closer to race-winning form.

"We have been focusing and spending so much time doing a lot of work, trying to improve the operations, software, and hardware," he added. "It's been quite difficult because, at the end of Season 9, the package was not really showing good competitiveness. At the beginning of Season 10, it wasn't great but we improved. We changed a lot of things, and operations got much better."

Looking ahead, Mortara is optimistic about returning to Berlin, a track where he has secured three pole positions, two podiums, and a race win in the past. With four rounds remaining, he believes the team can still build on their momentum.

"This year has been crucial for us. We brought some big updates in terms of software that made us close a bit of the gap with the front runners. I feel that now we start to have a package that is capable, not always but on certain race weekends to challenge much at the front, and we probably had the best package in the race.

"Nevertheless, this result (Jakarta) is showing a good promise for the last race weekends that we will have, especially Berlin, which has always been a good one for me."
