QUALI REPORT: Jake Dennis storms to pole position in Jakarta for Andretti

Andretti's Jake Dennis secured his first Julius Baer Pole Position of the season in a busy qualifying session in Jakarta.

Jake Dennis and Andretti are back on top after beating NEOM McLaren's Taylor Barnard in the Final Duel in Jakarta, Indonesia. The British duo looked strong throughout the session, but a rare mistake from Barnard and a flawless lap from Dennis saw him secure his first Julius Baer Pole Position of the GEN3 Evo era.

Several big names were eliminated early on, including championship leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan) who will start 17th and Maximilian Guenther (DS PENSKE) who dominated proceedings here when we last visited, including achieving both pole positions. Both the TAG Heuer Porsche's of  Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa failed to make into the Duels.

Final

It was Jake Dennis taking on Taylor Barnard for pole, but the NEOM McLaren driver made a mistake on his lap to hand the first-place grid slot to Dennis. “I think I had the pace to do it” Barnard said after his lap, but instead Andretti and Jake Dennis managed their first pole position in over a year.

Semis

Jake Dennis was looking comfortable during his Duel with Nick Cassidy, having only been in the Semis once so far this season in Miami. However, he pushed through to snap up a guaranteed slot on the front row of the grid. It was still a mega effort from Cassidy, who had limited running in Free Practice 2 after a suspension issue.

Next was the turn of de Vries versus Barnard, with Taylor managing another final – having won four of his last semi-final performances.

Quarters

First up was Jake Dennis versus Edoardo Mortara, with the latter maintaining his 100% record of getting into the Duels during the Jakarta E-Prix. Nevertheless, it was Dennis who headed through as he chased three consecutive front row starts at the Indonesian race.

Cassidy was the next to get into the Semis having gone up against Jean-Eric Vergne, who was the first pole sitter for the inaugural Jakarta E-Prix in 2022. The Jaguar driver is fresh off the back of a victory in Shanghai, and will aim to make it two in a row!

Sebastien Buemi did a great job to get through to the Duels, and battled on-track with the Mahindra Racing of Nyck de Vries. The Indian manufacturer was the only team who had both drivers in the Duels, and it was de Vries who set the best time of the two.

The final quarter was a battle of the Brits with Taylor Barnard taking on Dan Ticktum. For Ticktum his previous best qualifying was 14th, but he wasn’t able to make it onto the second row of the grid as it was Barnard who was the better by just 0.005s.

Group A

STELLANTIS power remained supreme in the first group, with Jean-Eric Vergne continuing the trend of their powertrains topping every session this weekend so far. He was joined in the top four by Jake Dennis, Edoardo Mortara and Nick Cassidy who all progressed through to the Duels.

However, the big story was Oliver Rowland who will start on the ninth row of the grid as the championship leader set a time that was a second slower than Vergne during Group A. He lost a lot of time in Turn 13, breaking too late into the corner and resulted in him positioning his Nissan onto the dirty part of the circuit.

Group B

Taylor Barnard was looking rapid in the second group and placed himself top of his group, despite moments later Nyck de Vries settling an identical lap time. The rules state that the individual who got the time first goes top, but there’s no denying Mahindra looks great here. Sebastien Buemi locked himself into third with Dan Ticktum taking the final spot in the Duels.

Mitch Evans finished fifth, with Maximilian Guenther sixth for DS PENSKE – two former race winners here. TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein was seventh, but was under investigation for driving unnecessarily slowly.
