ONES TO WATCH: Who can beat the heat in Jakarta for Round 12?

Who will come out on top in Indonesia? Here's our predictions...

Formula E returns to Indonesia this weekend, with just five rounds of the season left to go. These are the teams and drivers that our championship journalist, Katy Fairman, thinks you should pay close attention to for Round 12 in Jakarta.

It’s go time for Guenther

When Formula E last visited Indonesia, Maximilian Guenther was in the form of his life. Not only was he topping free practice sessions, he picked up both Julius Baer pole positions, third in the first race and the victory in the second. He was on incredible form, racing for the Maserati MSG Racing team at the time, and will be looking to repeat his successes on 21 June.

After storming to his second win of Season 11 in Shanghai, helping DS PENSKE secure their first-ever one-two result in the championship with teammate Jean-Eric Vergne, Guenther has continued to show his versatility in Formula E. With plenty of positivity following the Chinese double-header, Guenther looks in a good space to replicate the results we saw here when we last raced in 2023.

Heroes in the heat

One of the biggest challenges this weekend is making sure you remain cool, calm and collected in the intense heat and humidity. For most, they will have trained in similar conditions to make sure they’re ready to acclimatise, but for a handful of drivers on the grid they relish in the heat. Speaking to reigning champion Pascal Wehrlien ahead of a vey warm São Paulo E-Prix in 2024, he told me that he loves the warmer weather and that speaks volumes after he won here in Season 9.

Other drivers have grown up in similar conditions, with it worth keeping an eye of Lola Yamaha ABT duo of Lucas di Grassi and Zane Maloney. Born in Brazil and Barbados, these two have been showing great potential all season and if their cars can perform, I think either of them could find themselves in the top 10 come the chequered flag — could we see Maloney get his first Formula E points this weekend?

Could Jaguar make it back-to-back?

After suggesting that a Jaguar comeback could be on the cards in Shanghai, Nick Cassidy delivered a stunning victory from pole position to take his first win in over a year. The Kiwi perfected Sunday’s wet running, securing pole before going on to win the race in very wet conditions. However, it wasn’t just the precipitation that helped his first place finish, as Cassidy could also see the potential in the dry too.

With some momentum finally on his — and the team’s — side, it’s possible that we could see the Jaguar crew deliver consecutive wins in Season 11. This theory is also helped by Mitch Evans, who was the very first winner at the Jakarta E-Prix in Season 8. Keeping his cool in the toasty temperatures, Evans became the inaugural winner around the Indonesian circuit and also finished on the podium here last time out. Can he achieve three pieces of Jakarta silverware for the Jaguar trophy cabinet?

Will Rowland extend his championship lead?

Despite the dominance Nissan’s Oliver Rowland has demonstrated so far this season, Shanghai showed us that his title campaign isn’t all smooth sailing as he finished off the podium across both Chinese races and even out of the points for Round 11.

The championship leader has raced in Jakarta once before, but had a very early retirement at the race in Season 8. He then departed Mahindra Racing ahead of the event a season later, being replaced by Roberto Merhi. Rowland also spends a lot of his time in Dubai, so perhaps that heat training will pay off withe the conditions.
