Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy picked up his first Julius Baer Pole Position of Season 11, after setting the best time across the two Group sessions. It was decided that the championship would not be using the Duels format for this qualifying, and instead the grid would be decided by the best times across Group A and Group B times.
“If, for exceptional reasons, the "Duels" did not take place, the starting grid will be based on the "Groups" results,” the FIA sporting regulations state.
“Drivers classified in positions 1 to 12 of the fastest overall Driver's Group will be allocated the odd positions on the grid (1/3/5/.../23), and those classified in positions 1 to 12 of the other Group will be allocated the even positions (2/4/6/.../24).”
Inclement weather conditions at the Shanghai International Circuit has already seen changes to the sporting schedule, with all of Sunday’s sessions brought forward in a bid to get on-track action underway.
There was just under seven minutes of track action during Free Practice 3 this morning, and be sure to stay tuned to Formula E and their socials to follow updates for the race this afternoon, starting at 13:00 local time.
Cassidy will line up alongside TAG Heuer Porsche of Antonio Felix da Costa in second, with his Porsche teammate Pascal Wehrlein third and Lucas di Grassi managing an impressive fourth spot for Lola Yamaha ABT. Jake Hughes for Maserati MSG Racing will be fifth with Jean-Eric Vergne sixth for DS PENSKE.
Nyck de Vries came back from a spain in his Mahindra Racing to qualify seventh, with Stoffel Vandoorne (Maserati MSG Racing) eighth. Round 10 winner Maximilian Guenther is ninth, with Anrtretti’s Nico Mueller rounding out the top 10.
Group A
The session did eventually start at 09:45 local time, with Mitch Evans the first to take to the wet track. His teammate Nick Cassidy had a slow start leaving the pit lane behind him, something that was noted by the stewards and was under investigation.
Cassidy set the early pace, but his time was improved on by Pascal Wehrlein and later Jake Hughes as some standing water began to be dislodged by the Group A grid. Several drivers were noted for driving unnecessarily slowly in these conditions, including Hughes and Rowland.

Rowland had a near miss with his teammate Norman Nato, complaining on radio that he was in his way but the Frenchman did eventually let Rowland pass for one final push lap. Nyck De Vries also had a spin whilst on a lap but recovered and finished the session in fourth.
At the chequered flag, it was Cassidy quickest, Wehrlein second, Hughes third and De Vries who sat in fourth. Yesterday’s winner Maximilian Guenther was fifth and standings’ leader Oliver Rowland down in ninth.
Group B
The next haul of drivers headed out, with conditions still very damp. Da Costa was the first to bank a fast lap around the circuit, but it was clear things were still a huge challenge.
Just as seen in the first session, drivers were being noted for driving unnecessarily slowly with Barnard, Vandoorne and Frijns all shown black and white flags for the offence.
David Beckmann had quite the spin over the kerbs, followed by Taylor Barnard who both managed to keep their cars on-track. However, moments later Sebastien Buemi suffered a brake failure and was sent spinning at Turn 5. He pulled over, deploying a red flag, before doing a reset and limping back to the Envision Racing garage.

Once things got going again, it was Jake Dennis who bagged the front of the queue but conditions worsened and soon Group B was red flagged again for safety precautions and was not resumed.
