UNDER THE SKIN: Monaco

UNDER THE SKIN: Monaco

Rolling off the back of a sensational double header in Rome, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the iconic streets of Monaco for Round 6 of the Championship. After the Eternal City shook the standings up, its tight at the top as seasoned Formula E stalwarts prepare to battle it out in the Principality on April 30. Here's your guide to the facts and stats behind the race in Monaco.

City state

Monaco is the world's second smallest country - after the Vatican City - with only two square kilometres in total land area. Despite this, Monaco has a population of around 38,000 and is the most densely-populated sovereign state in the world, as well as being home to many racing drivers.

Rich Pickings

Tourism drives Monaco's economy, with gamblers flocking to the Place du Casino in Monte-Carlo, but it is now known also as a major banking centre. Home to the world’s largest number of millionaires and billionaires per capita, the principality is well known for its favourable tax climate, closely guarding the privacy of its high-profile clients and residents.

Unexpected overtakes

Last year, the race gave way to 28 overtakes between the top six runners alone, with the lead changing six times. With a final few minutes, then reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa (DS TECHEETAH) cut Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans off with a daring last ditch move to take the win. The 2021 track incorporated a modified chicane on the harbourfront, which will disappear this year in favour of the typical Nouvelle Chicane layout. Expect more of the unexpected.

Racing royalty

Monaco has hosted numerous motor races, including the historic Monaco Rally and, most notably, the Monaco Grand Prix (and its respective feeder series), which was first run in 1929. Considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious and glamorous events in the sporting calendar, Monaco makes up the Triple Crown of Motorsport events, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Home race heroes

Monegasque team ROKiT Venturi Racing will be hoping to reinstate their patch of fine form at their home race in Monaco. Until Rome, the team's frontman Edoardo Mortara was the standings leader after a solid start to the season. Now fourth in the standings, Venturi will be seeking to secure at least a podium with experienced pairing Mortara and teammate di Grassi behind the wheel. In the past, the Principality has been kind to its home team with Nick Heidfeld and Stephane Sarrazin also claiming top ten finishes for the Monaco-based team here in the inaugural season.

New generation

As if Monaco needed any more excitement, Formula E's new Gen3 all-electric race car will be unveiled at the Yacht Club de Monaco on 28 April ahead of the Monaco weekend.

The Gen3 car, set to race from Season 9, will be presented to manufacturers, teams, drivers, partners and other VIP guests at the evening event. Fans will be able to experience the show via the championship’s digital channels and get a first in-depth look.

“Formula E’s Gen3 race car represents a leap forward for motorsport and electric mobility," says Jamie Reigle, Formula E CEO.
