Genpact and Envision Virgin Racing's Melting Point

Genpact and Envision Virgin Racing have created a life-size replica of the team's all-electric race car out of seven tons of ice, in-front of London's iconic Tower Bridge.

Over a 24-hour period the car will be exposed to London’s elements and allowed to melt representing the melting of the polar icecaps, which is accelerating due to climate change.

Genpact data scientists are developing an algorithm to predict the percentage of the sculpture that will melt over the 24-hour event – based on changing local conditions – and audiences invited to compete by predicting the melt rate.

For every entry Genpact will donate $1 to the Arctic Ice Project, an initiative that funds and coordinates world-class research partnerships to test and evaluate the most promising ice-preservation solutions. The event will be certified net-zero.

The Arctic Ice Project is working on solutions that restore the Arctic’s natural heat shield to mitigate the impact of global warming.

The Arctic is warming at more than twice the global rate of the entire globe, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. Arctic sea ice has been declining 10% per decade, and many experts now agree there is the possibility of ice-free Arctic summers by 2030. Restoring ice in specific strategic areas of the Arctic may represent the largest safe lever humanity has to stabilize the climate and reduce dangerous tipping-point risks.

The organization estimates that the solutions it is developing represent an opportunity to buy up to 15 more years for our global economies to decarbonize and build a more sustainable future.
