70 years of electric Nissans in 7 cars

With two fully-electric concept car reveals and the news of its entry into the FIA Formula E Championship still fresh from the Tokyo motor show, it's hard to believe Nissan's first electric car was born well over half a century ago. Now a market leader in electric driving, we look back 70 years to tell Nissan's all-electric story in seven special cars.

1947: Tama EV

Genisis came in 1947, in the (not-so-streamlined) shape of the Tama EV. Built by the Tokyo Electro Automobile Co Ltd, the company became part of Nissan shortly after.

1970: Nissan 315X

23 years after the Tama EV, the marque launched the bubble-shaped Nissan 315X, a two-door electric city car concept revealed at the Tokyo motor show.

1991: Nissan FEV

In the early nineties, Nissan launched the FEV concept at the Tokyo motor show. Designed for short-range driving, the car was a more streamlined take on an EV with it's enclosed rear wheel arch.

2007: Nissan Mixim

With 60 years between the Tama EV and the Mixim concept, much had changed in the EV world. With digital displays inspired by video game graphics, the Mixim was a compact EV aimed at younger drivers.

2010: Nissan Leaf

In December 2010, Nissan became one of the first manufacturers to launch a full battery-electric mass-production vehicle. With a projected range of 100miles, the Leaf saw fully-electric driving go from a concept to reality.

2016: Nissan BladeGlider

Taking inspiration from concept cars first shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2013, the Nissan BladeGlider prototype combined Intelligent Mobility and sustainability with sports-car capabilities.

2017: Nissan Leaf Nismo

Alongside the news that Nissan will be racing in Formula E from Season Five onwards, the marque revealed the Leaf Nismo concept at this year's Tokyo motor show. Having received special treatment from Nismo - Nissan's motorsport department - this latest variant of the Leaf could prove to be the world's first electric hot hatch.
