Dennis claims Tokyo pole for Andretti ahead of inaugural night race

Jake Dennis starts from the Julius Baer Pole Position for the third time this season, as he lines up for the very first Tokyo night race from the P1 grid slot.

Andretti’s Jake Dennis took a third Julius Baer Pole Position of the season, beating Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara in the Final Duel around this Tokyo street circuit. It was a close battle, with just 0.052s between the two and Dennis making up a big amount of time in the final sector.

The special livery, in a chrome silver and blue in collaboration with Liberty Walk, has brought the team mixed luck so far this weekend. Despite Dennis’ pole position, the other side of the Andretti garage are hard at work fixing his teammate’s car after Felipe Drugovich crashed during the second Free Practice session this afternoon and couldn’t make qualifying.

Qualifying here will be important, and all of the top three in the drivers’ standings failed to make it into the Duels. Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein will start ninth for Porsche, Mitch Evans for Jaguar TCS Racing is down in 16th with Nissan’s Oliver Rowland in 15th.

The session was red flagged for a crash for Porsche’s Nico Müller, who crashed into the barriers during his Semi Final Duel with Dennis.

Final

Jake Dennis got the better time in the Final Duel, but things started so strong for Mortara who looked to almost have the pole position in the bag. He was two tenths up in the first sector alone, but a small mistake in the final sector resulted in Mortara losing the position and Dennis' consistency helped bank his third Julius Baer Pole Position of the year after inheriting the P1 in São Paulo.

Semi Finals

There was drama in the first Semi Duel, as Nico Müller crashed whilst on his fast lap and clattered the techpro barriers. The Porsche pilot was fine, but there is concern if the team can get the car ready for the race at 20:00 local time. This left Jake Dennis to set a time on his own for a guaranteed slot in the Finals.

For the other Duel, Edoardo Mortara was the better in his battle between himself and Antonio Felix da Costa to get into the Final.

Quarter Finals

The first duo took to the track with Nick Cassidy and Nico Müller going head-to-head. It was the Porsche driver who set the best time, with an impressive 1m12.109s and therefore Müller progressed into the Semis.

Next was Taylor Barnard and Jake Dennis, with the Andretti driver giving his championship hopes a big boost to beat the DS PENSKE driver.

Following that it was Jean-Eric Vergne, who was already under investigation for impeding but also was also looked at for pit lane overspeeding. Regardless of that, the Citroën driver wasn’t quick enough and it was Edoardo Mortara who made his way into the next stage of qualifying.

Finally, Antonio Felix da Costa set the better time between himself and Dan Ticktum.

Group A

Jake Dennis was the quickest of the first group, with the Andretti driver banking a 1m13.719s. He was joined by Nico Müller in second, but his teammate and championship leader Pascal Wehrlein was knocked out of the Duels and finished the group in fifth. Nick Cassidy was third for Citroën Racing, with DS PENSKE’s Taylor Barnard fourth.

Both Nissans failed to make it into the Duels, with Oliver Rowland losing his 100% pole position record here by finishing the session in eighth after a few mistakes on his lap. Felipe Drugovich also didn’t make it out on track after his car was being rebuilt following a dramatic crash in FP2 earlier in the afternoon.

Group B

Jaguar TCS Racing’s Antonio Felix da Costa was the best of his group, closely followed by Edoardo Mortara at Mahindra Racing. Jean-Eric Vergne was third for Citroën, but will be investigated after the session for impeding Zane Maloney at Lola Yamaha ABT. Dan Ticktum was the final slot in the Duels for CUPRA KIRO.

Championship contender Mitch Evans was not happy with his tyres and set up, and could only manage eighth meaning all the top three in the drivers’ World Championship failed to make the Duels.
