Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries was the quickest man on track for the very first practice session of the day, setting a time of 1m27.050s. He set the stunning lap in the final moments of the session, and was joined by Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein two-tenths behind in second place.
Dan Ticktum was third for CUPRA KIRO, followed by Edoardo Mortara (Mahindra Racing) and then Jake Dennis (Andretti) completed the top five.
Several big names were down the bottom, including Citroën Racing’s Nick Cassidy in 18th and Oliver Rowland (Nissan) in 19th after bringing out the yellow flags earlier in the session.
As it happened...
The shorter session got underway at 07:30 local time, with the grid of 20 drivers taking to the iconic track. Almost all the drivers have driven here before, either in Formula E or in junior championships, apart from Envision’s Joel Eriksson. That didn’t stop him though, and with five minutes to go was fourth on the timings before eventually finishing 14th.
Reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland had an off at Turn 1, having a lock up into St Devote and bringing out the yellow flags. He managed to spin his Nissan back the right way, but had some concerns about the set-up of the car.
There were a few others that had little snaps of oversteer, or just familiarising themselves with the unique challenges on offer at the Monte Carlo track.
