A chapter closes for Lucas di Grassi in Formula E

From the GEN1 era of mid-race car swaps to the latest evolution of the GEN4 car, the 41-year-old driver has mastered it all, becoming an integral part of the all-electric championship.

Born in São Paulo in 1984, di Grassi worked his way up from his uncle’s kart shop in Interlagos to becoming a Formula E champion in 2017. He was the first driver to commit to the all-electric racing series when it made its debut in 2014 and went on to win the opening race in Beijing.

NEWS: Lucas di Grassi announces retirement from Formula E

Beyond the race track, Lucas is a strong advocate for sustainability and played a key role in developing the original prototype car that was used as a proof-of-concept for GEN1.

“I’m very proud as I helped to build the business up," Lucas said. "So being from day one beside Alejandro and putting this business together, now employing hundreds of people directly and indirectly, 20 drivers or more with the reserve drivers, and creating such a huge spectacle worldwide and pushing the technology forward, I’m very proud of where Formula E has grown as a business and where I bet my career; it was a good bet.

“I think there's a lot of opportunities there, and I (now) feel that I could add more value outside of the car than inside of the car. This is not a retirement announcement by any means, it’s just the close of one chapter and the beginning of another one, which I’m already actively working on to make this transition as best as I can.”

Last year, di Grassi joined the new Lola Yamaha ABT outfit, scoring 32 points over the course of the 2024/25 season and claiming Lola's first Formula E podium, a second place finish the 2025 Miami E-Prix. This season, the team have continued to grow and develop, making positive steps forward - especially in their qualifying performance. Despite this, the Brazilian driver remains firm in his decision.

“I think last year I had a fantastic season scoring 32 points and a podium for the team," Lucas continued. "And this year we need to step up and score at least as many points as we did last year. There's still a lot to catch up on and a lot of points for us to score and hopefully we can do that.

“I have two different views of Formula E, one as a competitor where I had a lot of success, I had a lot of ups and downs, a lot of emotions. I fought the best drivers in the world for more than a decade, I’ve been to every single Formula E race so far, and so I’m very proud of this side.

“Fans can remember me the way they want to remember, I don’t have any preference. I'm just thankful for the fans, all the messages, all the support that I've always had, it has been amazing.”
