Müller’s maiden win
It was a long-time coming for Porsche’s Nico Müller, who managed to achieve his very first Formula E win at the team‘s home race in Germany. Repping a special ‘pink pig’ tribute livery, the swiss driver started sixth and made his way up the grid in an energy management masterclass to finish the race with almost a five second gap to Nick Cassidy behind.
Evans extends his record
Mitch Evans might have announced his departure from Jaguar TCS Racing earlier in the week, but that didn’t stop him from having a brilliant race on Sunday to go from 17th to victory in Berlin. The Kiwi knows this Tempelhof track well, and played a smart strategy game to save his tyres and start further back to conserve energy and pull the pin on a late charge up the grid. The result? His 16th victory in Formula E, adding to his tally of the most wins in the championship’s history by a single driver.
Maloney qualifying breakthrough
It was a weekend of mixed emotions for the Lola Yamaha ABT team. The race weekend commenced with Season 3 champ Lucas di Grassi announcing his retirement from racing, with the paddock all paying tribute to the man who greatly shaped the series. Come qualifying, it was double Duels delight for Zane Maloney, who made it through to the qualifying final-eight format for the first time in his Formula E career.
From there he also fought his way up the pack in Round 7, as well as di Grassi, to not only lead his first Formula E race but also have a Lola Yamaha ABT 1-2 at the front of the grid.
Felipe’s First Points
It’s fair to say Felipe Drugovich has found his start to a full-time Formula E seat a challenge, with some really impressive performances but had still not managed any top-10 finishes come final classification. However returning to a circuit he’s raced at for the first time in his Formula E career proved beneficial, as he was able to put his first points on the table with Andretti after finishing ninth in Round 8.
He also got through to the Duels across both days, and next up is Monaco – a race he knows well.
Porsche’s standings clean sweep
As we approach the mid-point of the season, Porsche has power over all three World Championships: drivers’, teams’ and manufacturers’. Pascal Wehrlein came into the weekend as the points leader, but lost the position after a puncture ruined his race on Saturday and gave the lead to Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara who achieved his fourth Julius Baer Pole Position at the Tempelhof Circuit. But, a third-place on Sunday brought him back to the top with 101 points to his name. Just behind is Evans on 98, with Mortata third on 93.
Porsche have also got close competition across the teams’ fight, as they lead on 176 with Jaguar closing the gap with 163 – having won four of the first eight races.
The battle will continue as we get ready for Monaco in just over a fortnight's time.
