FP2 REPORT: Drugovich quickest across wet Madrid practice

Felipe Drugovich was top of the timesheets for Free Practice 2 in Madrid, as the Brazilian rookie looks to achieve his first Formula E Julius Baer Pole Position in just a few hours time. It’s a special track for Andretti, as Mario Andretti won here back when Formula 1 raced in Jarama – can they do it again in their electric era?

Behind Drugovich, who set a time of 1m38.796s in damp conditions, was Jean-Eric Vergne Citroën Racing, followed by Nissan’s Norman Nato, Nyck de Vries of Mahindra Racing and Nick Cassidy of Citroën Racing to round out the top five.

Despite the wet conditions, and a few excursions through the gravel trap at Turn 1, it was an uninterrupted session with qualifying getting underway at 10:40 local time today.

As it happened...

FP2 got the green light at 08:30 local time, as the FIA defined the track as being wet. Having rained across last night, the conditions made it slippery and meant drivers were drifting and trying to get some warmth into their tyres.

The gravel trap at Turn 1 also had plenty of visitors during the session, including two champions! Both Lucas di Grassi (Lola Yamaha ABT) and Jake Dennis (Andretti) had excursions through the run-off, but managed to avoid the wall.

As the session drew to a close, Nyck de Vries set a rapid lap to go almost a second clear of the field with five minutes to go with a 1m38.963. It looked like it would be tough to beat, but as the session dried and came to an end a series of drivers improved massively to reshuffle the order.

Once all cars had crossed the chequered flag, it was Felipe Drugovich of Andretti who was quickest followed by Jean-Eric Vergne in the Citroën Racing who was 0.074s behind. Norman Nato was just over a tenth behind the Brazilian, with de Vries having to settle for fourth despite his earlier efforts.
