Dan Ticktum topped the session for CUPRA KIRO ahead of qualifying for Round 4 in Jeddah, as the Brit looks to bank his first points of the season here in Saudi Arabia. Ticktum was followed by Jake Dennis at Andretti and Pascal Wehrlein of Porsche, with Norman Nato fourth for Nissan and Edoardo Mortara fifth for Mahindra Racing.
The big story of the session was reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland bringing out the red flags for a crash midway through the session. The Nissan driver was on an excellent lap, going quickest in the first two sectors before he clipped a barrier at Turn 16, and destroyed the front-right of his car as a result.
Rowland’s suspension was immediately broken, and there could be concern for his Nissan’s powertrain and driveshaft ahead of qualifying which gets underway at 15:40 local/12:40 UTC.
As it happens...
The second Free Practice got underway at 13:30, with temperatures much higher than will be experienced across qualifying and the race later today. Despite this, drivers were banking lap after lap to familarise themselves with this Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) had an early impeding incident with Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche), with the most-recent Miami E-Prix winner complaining of how the Season 10 World Champion got in his way. Impeding has been a common issue during this 19-corner track, with tight and twisty turns around every corner.
As the session approached its halfway spot, it was Sebastien Buemi who was top of the times but Nissan’s Oliver Rowland was on a rapid lap. He went quickest in Sector 1 and Sector 2, but a small mistake resulted in Rowland clipping a chicane barrier at the end of the lap and destroying his front-right suspension.
Unable to continue, the World Champ was forced to stop at the side of the circuit which deployed a red flag as his car was recovered. Once the session resumed, there were eight minutes on the clock.
Dan Ticktum got the best time of the day in the final moments, setting a 1m15.343s for CUPRA KIRO. He knocked his compatriot Jake Dennis off the top spot, with Pascal Wehrlein of Porsche in third.
