The 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix takes place next week, and is sure to get the new year started with plenty of action as the championship returns to one of its most popular circuits.
Jake Dennis and Andretti took first honours at the opening round in São Paulo last month, but how will the rest of the grid fare for Round 2 in Mexico.
Where does Formula E race in Mexico City?
Formula E will be returning for its 10th running of the Mexico City E-Prix on 10 January 2026, with the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez being a key part in our racing history. It has hosted season-openers, delivered super racing spectacles and seen victories lost just metres from the finish line.
Named after Mexico’s iconic racing driver brothers, Ricardo Rodríguez and Pedro Rodríguez, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a venue unlike any other on the calendar. The city itself sits around 2,240 meters (7,349 feet) above sea level, which means oxygen levels are lower due to the high altitude, with the circuit itself being a permanent facility with championships like Formula 1 also racing here too.
The circuit is one of the fastest on the Season 12 calendar, with a race-ready surface and plenty of sweeping corners across the 16 turns. The layout combines long straights with a complex, technical infield section that cuts through the legendary stadium section, and has changed for Season 12 with the removal of the chicane after Turn 8.
Each race starts with a rapid rush down the main straight before the grid reaches Turn 1, a popular place for late-breaking moves. Following the long, fast Turn 2 and the sweeping Turn 3, drivers enter a tight four-turn sequence.
MEET THE GRID: Which drivers are racing in Formula E in 2025/26?
Drivers reach Turn 9 and are sent into the iconic Foro Sol stadium, where they will also be presented with the ATTACK MODE activation zone, before exiting and finding themselves along the Peraltada curve before reaching the start line once again.
Best overtaking spots in Mexico City
Turn 1 is the prime-passing spot around the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, offering a great chance for a late-breaking move after speeding down the start-finish straight and in the slipstream of the car ahead. Oliver Rowland of Nissan, made several moves in that exact spot here on his way to victory in Season 11.
Elsewhere, there are great opportunities to make a cheeky move into the entry of the Foro Sol stadium.
The winner takes it all
The Mexico City E-Prix has shown an unusually strong correlation in recent years, with the winner of the event going on to lift the FIA Drivers’ World Championship trophy later that season!
This coincidence started in the GEN3 era, with Jake Dennis the first to accomplish this in Season 9 when he won in Mexico City on his way to his maiden drivers’ title. In 2023, Dennis delivered a dominant performance to win the first race with the new generation of cars and kickstarted his championship-winning season where he claimed a record-breaking 11 podiums across the campaign.
STATS: Mexico City winners who went on to become Formula E Champion
Next was the turn of Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein, who managed a flawless victory in Mexico City to convert his Julius Baer Pole Position into the win thanks to a well-executed strategy. This was his second win in Mexico City, after standing on the top step of the podium in 2022 too. He would also go on to become champion after a nail-biting finale in London that season.
Last was the turn of Oliver Rowland, who was best of the rest here in Season 11. He overcame a qualifying mistake which left him to start fourth, but made moves up the grid and perfectly timed his second ATTACK MODE to execute a brilliant series of overtakes to secure the victory. Rowland dominated the first half of the season, and is our reigning World Champion after sealing the deal with two races to go in Berlin last year.
Can this turn of events happen in Season 12? Make sure you don’t miss another moment to find out.
