Dan Ticktum was the quickest guy on track for the first Free Practice in Monaco, topping the timesheets with a time of 1m27.511s for the CUPA KIRO team. It’s a great start for the team, who are hunting their first piece of silverware after their rebrand ahead of Season 11.
TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein was just 0.004s seconds behind to finish in second, with Nyck de Vries and Mahindra Racing looking fast and ending the session in third. Andretti’s Jake Dennis was fourth, Edoardo Mortara fifth, and Season 7 winner here, Antonio Felix da Costa, was sixth for Porsche.
Both Nissans were seventh and eighth with Oliver Rowland the quicker of the two, with Jake Hughes ninth for the home Maserati MSG Racing team and Maximilian Guenther completing the top 10 for DS PENSKE.
As it happened…
It was an early start for our 22 drivers, who headed out for their first laps of the iconic street circuit in Monaco. Basking in the golden sunrise, all drivers used the opportunity to get used to the new surface layout, practice the new ATTACK MODE which has been repositioned by 10 metres from last season, and familiarising themselves with PIT BOOST which returns in the race later today.
The session was a clean one, with Porsche leading the pack within the first few early laps. Reigning champion Pascal Wehrlein achieved the Julius Baer Pole Position here last season, and will be hoping to make it back-to-back poles in consecutive seasons this weekend.
Plenty of drivers had their time at the top including Lola Yamaha ABT’s Zane Maloney, and CUPRA KIRO found themselves in first and second with 12 minutes left on the clock.
That pace continued for Ticktum, who topped the session at the chequered flag. It’s a great start to the weekend for the CUPRA KIRO team, who are still rocking their special Marvel Thunderbolts* livery. His teammate David Beckmann ended the session in 16th.
There was an issue for the Jaguar TCS Racing of Nick Cassidy, who had a failure with a cooling pump, and finished the session in last place with limited running.
