Porsche preview unique Cayman e-volution

Following Porsche's decision to join the FIA Formula E Championship for Season Six in 2019 earlier this year, the German sports car specialist previewed an all-electric Cayman at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in the company's hometown of Stuttgart.

Officially dubbed the Cayman e-volution, the car will not go into series production, rather it 'hints at what is to come in 2019,' when the marque's first purely electric production car - the Mission E - will be launched.

Boasting a charging voltage of 800 volts, the Cayman e-volution can accelerate from standing to 62mph in 3.3s and cover 124miles on a single charge. Fast forward to 2019 and the Mission E will be capable of covering a range of over 310miles while charging its batteries to 80 per cent will take just 15minutes.

To achieve that, Porsche has created its new Turbo Charging facility - a system capable of reaching a charging capacity of up to 320kW per vehicle. Developed by Porsche Engineering and ADS-TEC, the system will be part of a Europe-wide charger network, which Porsche - alongside partners Audi, BMW, Daimler and Ford - will roll out across major European traffic routes by 2020.

With a rich racing pedigree including four Monte Carlo Rally wins, 19 Le Mans victories and 26 Grand Prix wins, all eyes will be on the German marque as it enters into the world of all-electric racing in 2019. Click here for a taste of what's to come.
