FP2: Cassidy quickest in wet London

Envision Racing’s Nick Cassidy let his championship rivals know he means business, as he set the fastest time in the final free practice session before the London E-Prix qualifying.

The Kiwi, who is still in the title fight, went over three-tenths quicker than the next guy, NIO 333’s Dan Ticktum. All four championship contenders, Cassidy, Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti), Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) and Pascal Wehrlein (TAG Heuer Porsche) all finished inside the top six.

His main championship rival, and the man 24 points ahead of Cassidy in the standings, Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) finished down in fifth. The Brit can wrap up the championship in today’s London E-Prix, and has got plenty of eyes on him including team boss Michael Andretti who is present again this weekend.

RESULTS: The full FP2 classification

Thanks to the typical British Summer weather, heavy rain made for a wet track for Free Practice 2. Although we have had wet conditions in GEN3 before, with the ABT CUPRA’s putting on a masterclass in Berlin, this circuit posed a very unique opportunity. It’s half indoor-outdoor design means drivers won’t have the same consistency throughout a lap which certainly makes it a challenge!

Robin Frijns (ABT CUPRA) had a little moment, going down the run off at the chicane - something we have seen several times over the weekend so far. However, this unfortunately wasn’t his only off, as he brought out a red flag with a minute left on the clock. The Dutchman lost his car at the hairpin, clipping the wall and ending up in the barrier, also preventing any final flying laps from others on the grid.

Two-time champ Jean-Eric Vergne (DS PENSKE) also ran off at Turn 1 during FP2, but he managed to master a quick turn around to join the track without any issues.

As the session progressed and the track became drier, the lap times began to fall with plenty of drivers getting a chance at the top of the timesheets. However, it was Cassidy who stood proud at the top, with his Envision teammate Sebastien Buemi finishing in third. TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein, who is also in championship contention at this double header finale, finished fourth with Dennis in fifth.

Both NIO’s looked strong, with Ticktum ending the 30 minute session in second and his teammate Sergio Sette Camara in seventh.
