Jaguar I-PACE batteries given second life as zero emission energy storage 

Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with Off Grid Energy to develop a zero emission energy storage unit powered by second life Jaguar I-PACE batteries.

The mobile gridtogo Battery Energy Storage System, features one-and-a-half second life Jaguar I-PACE batteries and supplies zero-emission power where access to the mains supply is limited or unavailable.

The unit helped Jaguar TCS Racing prepare for the 2022 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship during testing in the UK and Spain, where it was used to run the team’s diagnostic equipment and to supply auxiliary power to the pit garage. It's charged by solar panels - holding up to 125kWh of energy, which is enough to charge an I-PACE or to power an average family home for a week.

"Jaguar TCS Racing is always looking at improving our carbon footprint and using the Off Grid Energy storage system provides us with an innovative renewable energy solution for testing. To use second-life Jaguar I-PACE batteries completes this sustainable circle and showcases the team’s Race To Innovate mission.”

Reimagine

The partnership is helping Jaguar Land Rover grow its circular economy - the idea that designing out waste and pollution keeps products and materials in use - and achieve net zero status by 2039 as part of its Reimagine strategy. Finding a second life for batteries after they have been removed from EVs avoids waste and early recycling while creating a secure supply of rare materials by reducing use of virgin resources.

Jaguar TCS Racing committed its long-term future to the Gen3 era of Formula E back in July last year, and the team is seen as integral to helping Jaguar Land Rover develop new sustainable technologies, set new benchmarks in quality with its partners and support Jaguar’s renaissance as an all-electric luxury brand from 2025.

“Our collaboration with Off Grid Energy is a proof point in such direction, showing how it’s possible to supply zero emission power through the combination of renewables and second life batteries," said François Dossa, Executive Director for Strategy & Sustainability, Jaguar Land Rover. "Through their testing at Valencia, the Jaguar TCS Racing team have shown how we can inspire the whole ecosystem to continue to explore synergies and validate viable solutions for clean energy."
