BMW i Andretti Autosport's Max Guenther topped the time sheets in the very first test session at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia. DS Techeetah's Da Costa and Vergne finish second and third.
After BMW i Andretti Motorsport dominated testing last season, the German marque once again sat at the top of the time sheets with Max Guenther posting the fastest time of the morning - a 1:15.926 lap.
The Bavarian driver's lap time improved on Antonio Felix da Costa's former record of 1:16.977, set on a different circuit configuration last year. This season, a simplified chicane on the start/finish straight saw a total of 17 drivers top the former time.
Pulling in close behind Guenther was reigning champion team DS Techeetah with da Costa (1:16.032) and Vergne (1:16.162) finishing second and third. For customer teams Envision Virgin Racing and Venturi Racing, the cars hit the track for the very first time, withVenturi's Edoardo Mortara posting the best time of them all, with a 1:16.531 lap.
For new teams Mercedes-Benz EQ and TAG Heuer Porsche FE, the session marked the first time all four German marques took to the track in Formula E. New Porsche hire Andre Lotterer proved to be the quickest of the new teams, setting a best lap time of 1:16.662, while his teammate Neel Jani posted a time of 1:17.343 before stopping the session early.
Technical trouble in the second half of the session for Mercedes-Benz rookie Nyck de Vires saw him stop on track between Turn 9 and 10. With his car recovered, the Dutch driver was back out on track but only managed a best time of 1:22.500.
For Panasonic Jaguar Racing's rookie James Calado, a collision left his car stranded on track with a broken front axle. The Red Flag was deployed while his car was retrieved, bringing the session to a halt temporarily.
