ABB donates 30 car charge points to the city of Zurich

From race to road - ABB helps make Zurich all-electric to celebrate its 30th anniversary

ABB donates 30 car charge points to the city of Zurich

If you hadn't guessed already, we're petty keen on electromobility here at the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. When we race, there's nothing but 20 pure electric, zero-emissions cars racing around tight, city street circuits. Nothing more, nothing less.

But it's more than just racing. Together with partners like technology group ABB, the championship acts as a test bed for car manufacturers to develop the very latest technology on the race track before it reaches the road. To celebrate 30 years of ABB - which first formed in 1988 after Sweden’s ASEA and Switzerland’s BBC merged - the technology group gifted 30 fast-charging stations to the city of Zurich, which is also home to the company's headquarters.

“I am delighted to accept his gift on behalf of the people of Zurich. It’s a farsighted gift that takes the city of Zurich another step forward in e-mobility,” said the Mayor Mauch of Zurich.

The Terra 54 fast-charging stations from ABB are well suited to an urban setting. Capable of charging not only electric cars but also buses and trucks quickly, the vehicles using them will be able to add hundreds of kilometres to their range.

“We look forward to working together with the city of Zurich – the home and heart of ABB – to shape the future of sustainable mobility,” said ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer. “We already have more than 7,000 fast charging stations installed worldwide. As the global market leader in e-mobility, we are extremely pleased to expand this base by 30 stations today, and in doing so to actively support Zurich’s journey to sustainable and eco-friendly mobility. Zurich has always been a pioneer of urban e-mobility. We consider it an honour to be able to further this pioneering spirit with our leading technology solutions.”

With a history of electrifying the streets of Zurich, Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon, one of ABB’s Swiss predecessor companies, electrified Zurich’s very first tramline in 1894. Today, they are helping to bring all-electric racing to Switzerland's streets after more than 60 years alongside providing charging solutions for electric cars, buses and trucks and even ships, railways and cable cars.
