Sam Bird shows his football skills at Street Games tournament

DS Virgin Racing’s title outsider Sam Bird showed he is no mean footballer too as he took to the pitch at Roehampton Youth Club on Monday evening.

Bird, who was on the books of Wimbledon FC before concentrating on becoming a professional racing driver, relived his youth as part of Formula E’s support of the Street Games charity.

After a brief warm-up, Bird was thrown into the mixer, representing Germany(!) in a mini recreation of the Euros. After demonstrating some dazzling footwork, he then gave a motivational speech to players, all of whom come from under-privilege backgrounds.

“Whatever you want to be – whether that’s a footballer, a racing driver or a mechanic – the most important thing is to work hard,” he told them. “If you want to follow your dream, you need to be motivated and believe in yourself and push yourself as hard as you can. The one thing that drivers like Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel or Michael Schumacher is their determination and dedication to their dream.”

You can watch Sam Bird fight for the FIA Formula E Championship this weekend in Battersea Park – click here for tickets.

Streetgames will also be present in the eVillage at the London ePrix. Taking over the all-weather courts in the South West Corner of the park, fans will have the opportunity to get involved in some zorbing, bubble football, trivolle, handball as well as an inflatable penalty shootout. Suitable footwear must be worn – clean trainers or astro boots with no studs or blades are required.
