Automobile Club of Uruguay welcomes Formula E to South America

Government officials, local authorities and the Automobile Club of Uruguay (ACU) gathered in Montevideo to welcome Formula E for the second running of the Julius Baer Punta del Este ePrix.

The fully-electric single-seater car was on display for assembled media at the ACU headquarters in Montevideo ahead of the race on December 19.

Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said: “Following the success of the opening two races of the season we are looking forward to arriving in Punta del Este, a beautiful and picturesque location to host a Formula E race on the beaches of South America. The circuit is one of the quickest on the calendar and the fans in Uruguay are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable. We are thankful for the continued support and co-operation of the ACU and the local authorities on helping us put on such a fantastic event.”

Jorge Tomasi, Chairman of the Automobile Club of Uruguay, said: “From the presidency of Jean Todt at the forefront of the FIA, one of the areas that has been most developed is the synergy between two of the areas that the governing body has; sport and mobility. In this regard, Formula E fulfils perfectly this role through a series that promotes both sustainability and the environment.”

Martin Laventure, Secretary of Sports for the Maldonado Region, said: “To be able to organise this second edition of the Formula E race in Punta del Este, after the success of the first one, meant a huge effort for the Maldonado Government. Apart from the sports side, Formula E is very linked to the investment in the respect for the environment that Uruguay and in particular Maldonado are doing. I hope all events and activities we could make will be in the frame with this respect for the environment.”

Alfredo Etchandy, Representative of the Sports Ministry of Uruguay, said: “The Formula E race means a lot for the Sports Ministry, it’s a great opportunity to greet the organisers of a series of this nature, that supports the country on its ecological, tourism and sporting side. It’s a great event in a great city and it’s part of a global championship. It’s with no doubt very important for everybody.”

Punta del Este plays host to round three of the FIA Formula E Championship and is the first stop on the South American leg of the series with the Buenos Aires ePrix on February 6 2016.
