PREVIEW: Everything you need to know ahead of Formula E's return to Mexico City

PREVIEW: Everything you need to know ahead of Formula E's return to Mexico City

Formula E returns to Mexico on 12 February for Round 3 of the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in Mexico City at the Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez – the site of six E-Prix to-date and a much-loved fixture on the calendar.

As it stands…

Edoardo Mortara heads to the Mexican capital top of the pile after his Round 2 win at the season-opening event in Diriyah a little over a week ago. Sixth for the Swiss-Italian in Round 1, combined with new teammate Lucas di Grassi’s podium in the second night race in Saudi Arabia, leaves ROKiT Venturi Racing at the top of the Teams’ standings as the early pacesetters – a spectacular start for the Monegasque team.

Mortara’s win followed Nyck de Vries’ victory in race one, as Mercedes-EQ got an immediate handle on the all-new Duels qualifying format. This put the team in the box seat, enabling reigning champion de Vries and teammate Stoffel Vandoorne to throw down the gauntlet with a formidable one-two finish. That fired the pair to second and third, respectively, in the Drivers’ running at the chequered flag in Saudi Arabia.

Last time out: the 2022 Diriyah E-Prix Round 2

The German manufacturer – and supplier of Venturi’s powertrain – sits just a point behind its ‘customer’ outfit in the Teams’ World Championship ahead of the trip to Mexico, with Mercedes power currently the benchmark.

That said, the competition is as close as it has ever been in Formula E, with 14 of 22 drivers able to score points. The likes of Jake Dennis (Avalanche Andretti) and Robin Frijns (Envision Racing) have got their hands on silverware already and look to have the pace to mix it in the race for top spot – Brit Dennis proving his debut season was anything but a one-off.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team and Jaguar TCS Racing also showed glimpses of pace, with fourth for Andre Lotterer and Sam Bird the best they could muster. There’s more to come from both, with Porsche’s race pace improving over the Diriyah weekend, and Jaguar aiming to avoid another double-shunt in qualifying which put pay to its Duels chances and left the British team marooned in race two.

The 2022 Mexico City E-Prix gets underway at 16:00 local time on Saturday 12 February. Find out where to watch and sync your calendar for all the latest updates and session times.

Back to Mexico City

This weekend Formula E makes a sixth visit to a circuit that’s been on the calendar since Season 2, save for a trip to Puebla in Season 7 – Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The 16-turn, 2.606km circuit is a perfect mix of long, fast straights and a technical infield section that passes right through the legendary Foro Sol stadium – housing tens of thousands of fans.

Lucas di Grassi (ROKiT Venturi Racing) has long been one to watch in Mexico. He won in Puebla last year, but the Brazilian made it two trips to the top step in Mexico City itself in 2019/20, after his first win in front of the Foro Sol in 2016/17.

That Season 5 win went down in Formula E history. Then-rookie Pascal Wehrlein fought hard out-front and veteran di Grassi wouldn’t give him a moments peace. Heading into the final lap, almost 40,000 fans took in Formula E’s most dramatic race finish, with Wehrlein holding fast to the last, before running out of usable energy after the final turn – allowing di Grassi to slip by right as they crossed the line.
