'We're no longer rookies; we can't use that excuse anymore,' says Mercedes-EQ Team Principal Ian James

'We're no longer rookies; we can't use that excuse anymore,' says Mercedes-EQ Team Principal Ian James

Mercedes-EQ Team Principal Ian James says his team can no longer lean on inexperience as an excuse in Season 7, and that while still learning, points must be scored wherever the team can.

Mercedes-EQ flew out of the blocks in Diriyah with Nyck de Vries storming to a Round 1 clean sweep and victory in the season-opener, meaning the team arrives in Rome second in the standings, four points back from Jaguar Racing.

With the German marque's maiden campaign now behind them - a successful one at that with Mercedes-EQ winding up third in the Teams' Championship - Team Principal Ian James is keen to re-enforce the squad's upward trajectory after that promising start to Formula E's first season as an FIA World Championship last time we hit the track.

"We can't use the excuse of being a rookie here anymore," said James. "Being a new team we had the realisation that coming into Season 7, that was now all behind us.

"We're still learning every race and every step we take but in Formula E you have to perform and make sure you can get points wherever there's an opportunity to do so."

First foray onto a city centre street circuit

With Season 6 curtailed amid the global health crisis, Mercedes-EQ and then-rookie Nyck de Vries have yet to taste a city centre Formula E street circuit, with races in Berlin, Mexico City, Marrakesh and Saudi Arabia taking place at out-of-town or purpose-built venues.

It'll be a case of banking more knowledge in Rome - a circuit the Mercedes drivers' have been waxing lyrical about following its changes for the 2021 running of the Rome E-Prix, says James.

"It seems like a long time ago since we were here (Season 5)," James adds. "But what you can see from the overlays is how different the track is. It's was a proper street circuit back then and it certainly is now.

"The drivers and the team as a whole are just looking forward to getting out there and seeing what we can do. The feedback we've had from the drivers and engineers has been incredibly complimentary.

"Formula E and the city of Rome has done an incredible job in getting this circuit layou done and we're all excited about getting back to street racing again."
