Jean-Eric Vergne: 'There's work to do but we're not too far away'

Jean-Eric Vergne: 'There's work to do but we're not too far away'

DS TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne admits he's not quite where he wants to be as Formula E heads to Monaco and the half way point of its first campaign as an FIA World Championship. The upside? A six-week break before Mexico and the fact that one good race could fire the Frenchman right into title contention.

“Monaco is Monaco, it’s just magic,” says Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne (DS TECHEETAH). He's one of two drivers on the grid to have taken the chequered flag first in Formula E around Monte Carlo’s hallowed harbourfront, with a lights-to-flag masterclass on his way to Drivers’ Championship number two back in 2018/19.

He came, he saw and he conquered in Rome, and took a pair of top 10 finishes in Valencia but JEV feels there's a bit of work to do for he and DS to be where they want to be heading into the second half of Formula E's first season as an FIA World Championship.

WAYS TO WATCH: Where and how to watch every minute of Season 7

"I’m not too unhappy with the first half of the season but we aren’t quite where we want to be," says the double champion. "The positive is, though, that we have a win and the other is that we aren’t very far away from the leaders.

"That’s something very important because you may be fourth and 50 points away which would be bad. So, I know that in one race day I can catch up and this can launch the second part of the season.

As he says, despite not showing the best of itself so far in Season 7, DS are in touching distance of the top - Vergne himself is just 24 points from standings leader Nyck de Vries (Mercedes-EQ).

"To go forward, we need to work a little on the car. We focussed a lot on the software side, but probably not quite enough and we’ve had some basic issues with things like balance which is ultra-important in Formula E. So, it’s important we come back to basics and Antonio (Felix da Costa) and myself will try and deliver.

"The car is good, the team is good and we both know how to win races. Monaco’s the half way point of the season. We hope to have a good Monaco and one-and-a-half months break to prepare."
