Wehrlein reflects on his Mexico podium and reaching 50 races

It might feel like it was only yesterday that TAG Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein joined the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, but come Friday, he'll be starting his 50th race with the all-electric championship.

Fresh from a podium in Mexico City, the 28-year-old has been reflecting on his Formula E journey since his first race at the 2019 Marrakesh E-Prix.

"The journey has been great so far," Wehrlein began. "Slowly, the results are coming in. We were working hard for the last couple of months and years. I'm in a super good place and very happy - I just want to win more races!"

Having started his Formula E career with Mahindra Racing for two seasons, Wehrlein jumped to join motorsport powerhouse Porsche for Season 7. Since the German driver joined the team, he's locked in two Julius Baer Pole Positions and delivered them their first and only victory in the championship to date.

Just one race into an exciting new generation for Formula E, Wehrlein has already equalled his podium record with Porsche compared to the last two seasons. With a second place to his name after Mexico, he'll be hoping for more of the same over this Diriyah double-header.

“[Mexico City] was great. I mean, before the weekend, we didn't know what to expect, really.

"It's the first time racing [Gen3], and we didn't know where we were in terms of performance. So it was good to start well into the season, and I had a lot of fun. I started in sixth and finished second with some good fights and a super strategy. Overall, a very good start."

Wehrlein also has a new Porsche teammate this season in Antonio Felix da Costa. Fortunately, he's full of praise for his new colleague, who just so happens to be a former Formula E champion!

"Antonio is a super cool guy. First of all, on a personal level, but also as a teammate. It's great that he's here, and I'm looking forward to working with him.

"I have known him for a long time. We raced together in F3, like 10 years ago in Macau, and also in DTM."

Will Wehrlein clinch back-to-back podiums for his half-centennial race? Be sure to watch the 2023 CORE Diriyah City E-Prix, Rounds 2 and 3 of Season 9, both from 20:00 local.
