Despite the infamous collision in 2019, which marred both Alexander Sims and his teammate's chances of a one-two finish, the Brit has a lot of positives to take from last season's Marrakesh E-Prix. This time out, the BMW frontman believespatience is key in Saturday's showdown in the Red City.
Over a year has passed since Sims stormed ahead in the 2019 Marrakesh E-Prix alongside his then teammate Antonio Felix da Costa. Pulling away from the pack, the pair looked set to clinch the team's first one-two finish in Formula E before a disastrous collision curtailed their championship chances, ending da Costa's race early. But much has changed since that fateful day. While Sims and da Costa have parted ways, the Brit has matured considerably as a driver, mastering the formula for the all-electric series with a win in New York City and two podiums.
"I think this is probably going to be one of the most challenging races on energy this season, and it's going to reward the person who is smart and patient," said the BMW frontman, speaking ahead of the race on Saturday. "But there is still a balancing act between not being too patient and letting the race get away from you," he added.
"We're in a sensible position but I don't think you can ever go into a Formula E weekend feeling like it's going to be a 'good-one' because there are so many variables that can be thrown up.
"The team has been working well and we had a pretty good pace here last year, so hopefully, we can recreate a similar weekend."
After scoring some vital points in Mexico and sitting just one point behind championship leader Mitch Evans, Sims still thinks any title aspirations are premature: "It's still too early to be worrying about the championship position too much.
"Mexico was a really strong race, we handled that well and were smart but I've got to be honest and say that I thought our qualifying was pretty disappointing.
"It's not all rosy, just because you are up there in the championship doesn't mean that things are easy, it's massively difficult. As we showed in Mexico you can get it wrong and right all within the same day."
