Hughes inherits Julius Baer Pole Position in Monaco

NEOM McLaren’s Jake Hughes has inherited Julius Baer Pole Position - his second of the season - after Nissan’s Sacha Fenestraz had his lap time cancelled for power usage over the regulatory limit of 350kW during the Qualifying Duels Final in Monaco.

The decision the FIA’s Formula E stewards made after qualifying means that Fenestraz will now start second. French-Argentine driver Fenestraz, who was quickest in the Finals of the Duels, looked to have secured his second pole position in his rookie year, but it wasn’t to be.

However, as well as Fenestraz’s lap time being cancelled, Hughes also had his lap time taken away after he failed to respect track limits. The NEOM McLaren driver went off the track at Turn 10 after he made a mistake coming out of the famous Monaco tunnel on his final run, slipping wide across the Nouvelle Chicane.

Nevertheless, Hughes will be the man on Julius Baer Pole Position for Formula E’s sixth visit to the Principality. Although the pole sitter has won four out of five Monaco E-Prix, that stat is quite the contrast to the fact that the polesitter is winless in the last 11 Formula E races, and none of them have even reached the podium in the previous seven races.

Maserati MSG Racing’s Maximilian Guenther also got a suspended three-place grid drop for his involvement in exiting the pit lane under a red light.

“Guenther exited the pit lane when the red light was on. The Stewards consider that Guenther was impeded by Sergio Sette Camara when he wanted to leave the pits. The Stewards also consider that he stopped at the pit exit a second time when it was not clear for him to go or not. Due to this situation, the Stewards suspended the penalty.”
