Every athlete dreams for the perfect day once in his career. A day when everything comes together. Daniel Abt experienced such a day, and he couldn't have picked a better stage...
German broadcaster ARD picked up the rights for the first free-to-air Formula E broadcast on domestic television for the first time on May 19, 2018.
The race would sit between the country's male football league cup final and its female counterpart, with more than a million viewers tuning in to watch a German Formula E driver race a level beyond.
Abt, then driving for Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, now of NIO 333, had secured a storming pole position in qualifying at Tempelhof to make the perfect start on home soil.
Come the race, he immediately jettisoned the pack and put clear air between himself and those chasing behind around the former airfield.
In front of a huge TV audience, and sold out grandstands at the Tempelhof stadium, Abt led each and every lap of the 45 minute plus one lap race and took the chequered flag in consummate style.
"Thank you, Berlin! I will never forget the day," screamed an emotional Abt over team radio.
With the black, red and gold flag around his shoulders he celebrated wildly on the podium and in front of the German crowd in front of him, showering as many as he could with the winners' Moet & Chandon champagne.
It was an historic victory - just his second in the championship. Not only was he the first German to win on home turf but he was also the first, and so far only, driver to complete the pole position, race win and fastest lap Grand Slam - leading every lap for good measure.
With his perfect day firmly in mind, Abt is now looking ahead to the season six finale. Six races in just nine days around Tempelhof, across three different layouts and with his new team - NIO 333. He can't wait.
"Berlin has a special meaning to me as a racing driver," he said. "I celebrated my best day there and I've always gone well in Germany.
"The fact things went well before, though, offers no guarantee that it'll be the same this year. I'm extremely excited about rolling out of the garage for my new team and I couldn't be more highly motivated.
"I'm going to give it everything to deliver the best possible show to all the fans watching at home."
