Bruno Senna became the first driver to directly benefit from fan interaction in motorsport when he used FanBoost to make an overtaking move in the Putrajaya ePrix.
Senna used the 30kw (40bhp) five-second power boost to pass Nico Prost for fourth position late in the race. He had already previously made one unsuccessful attempt using the system earlier in the race.
“The first time I tried was against Nelson Piquet and I didn’t know how much the FanBoost would give me,” he said. “I wasn’t close enough and Nelson was running very low wing so I couldn’t get properly close to him.
“When I came up to Nico I knew much better how to use it and it can be very useful and I’m happy that it worked here in Malaysia where everybody was afraid that the temperatures were going to be too high.”
Both Nick Heidfeld and Katherine Legge – the other two FanBoost winners – had their races ended early due to contact with other drivers.
