The championship marks the end of many eras in London this weekend, as the current generation of cars comes to an end, it’s the last race at the London Excel and it’s the final weekend for Lucas di Grassi as a Formula E driver.
The 2016/17 champion bids farewell to the racing Lola Yamaha ABT, and races with a unique livery paying homage to his previous colours from race teams gone by. 14 wins, 42 podiums and 1109 points is an incredible legacy in Formula E, but the Brazilian is ready to retire from racing.
“I think there are phases in life, right? It's almost like you go to school -school finishes-, you go to college -college it finishes-, then you go to work, and you work for a certain period in a company, you develop friends, but there is a phase and you finish, then you start a new thing. It's always sad, even if you made the decision and you are fully happy with that.
“I’m very proud of what I achieved, more than I ever dreamed in Formula E. Actually, in my motorsport career. It was due to my hard work and discipline and grit. It was not due because of my talent. I was probably not the most talented driver, in terms of I started quite late, so to achieve what I achieved, I'm super proud, but nevertheless.
“I'm happy that this cycle is finishing on a high with [the win in] Shanghai, but in a way, it's also sad because the cycle finishes with Lola, with all these relationships, so it's a mix of emotions.
“Nevertheless, it's a decision that I took. I will still be around in one way or another. So I'm happy that this new phase of my life will start, and I have a lot of interesting plans, a lot of things I want to build, and I will put the same energy and passion as I did with Formula E.”
When asked after his surprising Shanghai win, going from the back of the grid to Lola Yamaha ABT’s first victory after a strategy gamble on a dry set-up, di Grassi was asked if there was a moment he wished he’d stayed on racing in the championship.
“Zero. Nothing. No. I'm a very rational pragmatic guy. I'm emotional, but I'm very pragmatic and I'm trying to be realistic. Even in my most optimistic thoughts, I thought the probability that I would repeat a podium was already low. But to win a race. I think it's like the Haley comet passing by because it was such a miracle for us to win in Shanghai.”
With two races left, and at a circuit where he’s secured victory before, lots of eyes will be on di Grassi and his Lola Yamaha ABT team in London.
