Formula E: The race for cleaner air

ABB FIA Formula E actively promotes the adoption of electric mobility and alternative energy solutions to help reduce air pollution and fight climate change. This World Environment Day, we're driving home our message.

Formula E: The race for cleaner air

Why we race

Sustainability is deeply rooted in our DNA, as the reason we go racing. Formula E promotes electric mobility and alternative energy solutions to contribute to reducing air pollution and the fight against climate change, in partnership with the UN Environment Programme's #BeatAirPollution campaign.

Alongside our partners and some of the leading companies in the world, we are advocating the global adoption of clean mobility by enhancing technologies, working with cities to improve infrastructure and raising awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles - one of the most effective means of tackling urban air pollution.

The issue is among the largest environmental risks to health today. Urban air pollution is currently increasing by eight per cent every five years and 95 per cent of cities worldwide do not meet the guidelines established by the World Health Organization. It kills more people than smoking, with the WHO also estimating that seven million people die as a result of air pollution every year.

Our vision

At Formula E, we aspire to accelerate change towards an electric future, one race and one city at a time. Through the championship, we aim to raise awareness and inspire change in sustainable practises, contributing to reducing global carbon emissions and urban air pollution.

Using the spectacle of sport, we're sending powerful and meaningful message to help alter perceptions and speed-up the switch to electric mobility. We also operate as a testbed to push the development of new technologies needed for an electric, low-carbon future. Working in close collaboration with our host cities to leave a lasting legacy wherever we race, Formula E is racing for a cleaner future, faster.

Cleaner air

In recent months, cities around the world have been able to experience cleaner air for the first time in decades, with emissions falling as a result of lockdown.

Two of our host cities, Paris and London, have seen levels of nitrogen dioxide levels fall between 20-35 per-cent and 35 per-cent, respectively. Electric vehicles, with zero emissions at the exhaust, offer us the opportunity to extend that downward trend.

This #WorldEnvironmentDay, it's #TimeForNature. We are in a unique moment where we can restore some balance and help make our cities, and beyond, places where people can thrive by working together to ensure that the reduction we're seeing to pollution levels isn't a temporary thing. We're racing for a cleaner future, faster. This is our #RaceForCleanAir.

Mapping the issue

Air pollution is a challenge for the entire planet. Formula E brings closely-contested racing to the city streets of the world in our Race for Clean Air which aims to help combat air pollution and climate change through the promotion and adoption of more sustainable mobility.

Mapping out pollution across the globe is one positive step we can make towards making air quality more transparent for everyone.

We have worked with Plume Labs to bring you an interactive map that allows you to understand the quality of air around you, and that of our teams, drivers and partners in real time.

Working together with our partners

Alongside our growing list of partners, leading road car manufacturers and automotive brands, we are collectively pushing clean mobility and alternative energy solutions to the production line and accelerating the mass adoption of electric vehicles around the world.

We are continuing to work with cities to improve charging infrastructure, as well as raising awareness of the benefits to driving electric and exciting future generations about embracing clean energy.

Through the championship, we aim to raise awareness and inspire change in sustainable practises, contributing to reducing global carbon emissions and urban air pollution.
