After making his ABB Formula E debut in São Paulo, where he was involved in a dramatic crash during the Full Course Yellow, Pepe Marti is now officially a points scorer in the championship and has established himself as one to watch this season.
Starting from P20 on the grid and with a 10-second stop-go penalty to serve in the race, you could be forgiven for writing off the chances of the young Spanish driver of making it anywhere near the points - and for most of the race, the back of the pack is where he remained.
However, the situation shifted when a Full Course Yellow period was triggered on lap 20, as Nyck de Vries came to a stop on track and retired from the race. This allowed Marti to catch up to the back of the pack and gradually climb his way forward as the race intensified, eventually taking seventh place with just two laps to go, finishing ahead of Citroën Racing’s Jean-Eric Vergne.
“We got quite lucky that it turned into the Safety Car later in the Full Course Yellow appearance," he said. "Last time out I was very unfortunate with it and this time it’s gone the other way. I think we executed the perfect race from the restart.”
A popular figure with the Mexican crowd, who showed their unwavering support throughout the weekend, Marti certainly gave them a performance to be proud of.
“I could hear it in the car, it was insane!” He continued, “It was when the Safety Car got called out that everybody knew that I was going to get close to the pack. I felt the boost of energy and it was crazy to rise up front.
“I had the advantage on energy, so I was just moving forward, trying to overtake, going for late moves into Turn Nine, so it was quite stressful. We took the ATTACK MODE at the right time, we did everything well, and I’m happy with it.”
With momentum on his side, Marti now turns his attention to his team’s home race in Miami, aiming to build on his breakthrough performance.
