After revealing German driver Maximilian Guenther would be joining the Bavarian team for the sixth ABB FIA Formula E Championship, British driver Alexander Sims will remain with the squad for a second season.
With days to go until pre-season testing kicks off in Valencia, Spain, BMW i Andretti Autosport will pitch Sims and Guenther against the most competitive line up in Formula E history, taking on fellow German giants Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
After finishing the season with a podium finish and 57 points to his name, 31-year-old Sims was quick to learn the ways of the all-electric series, challenging for the win in Marrakesh before a clash with his former teammate Antonio Felix da Costa destroyed both drivers’ chances of podium finish. Despite no win in his debut season, Sims scored his maiden podium in final moments of the championship, bringing home a third place in the final round in New York City.
“I learned so much in my rookie year; there were fantastic highs and some lows to overcome and I’m determined to utilise this knowledge and start where I left off, continuing to build from there,” said Sims.
“The competition is set to be tough this season with the other drivers, but I’ve got to grips with the unique challenges of Formula E and I’m ready to turn that experience into good results.”
As a long-standing BMW works driver in GT racing, Sims stepped up into Formula E ahead of the 2018/19 season, partnering Antonio Felix da Costa. Now, driving alongside Guenther, the two relatively inexperienced drivers will go wheel-to-wheel against the likes of two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne and TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E team’s Andre Lotterer.
“We have an exciting driver duo for our second Formula E season,” said BMW Group Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.
“Alexander Sims learned at a rapid pace in his first season, and showed that he can be up there at the front. He was unlucky in some of the races, but he finally celebrated his first podium at the finale in New York. I’m confident that he will be able to build on this in 2019/20.”
This time last year, the Brit topped the time sheets in pre-season testing twice. But with his second pre-season testing session set to take place in a matter of days, will Sims retain his top spot?
