Edoardo Mortara and Norman Nato secured the honours as the biggest risers across the two races in the English capital, marking their first Engineered to Outrun success of the season.
Though the tense title fight naturally stole headlines, Mortara and Nato scoring points from unlikely starting positions on Saturday and Sunday respectively showed the kind of class that runs deep through the field – even if it is out of the immediate spotlight.
Mortara started down in 18th for Saturday’s PIT BOOST race. He ran a longer first stint before his mandatory charging stop, saving a small but critical 2% extra energy compared to the median in the field in the process.
This allowed him to unleash more pace when others diving into the pits gave him clear air, aided by Mortara using six minutes of ATTACK MODE deployment. Though there was a full-course yellow to nullify the last minute and a half of this power advantage, it also facilitated a cheaper pitstop.
That perfect combination meant Mortara leapt from 15th to 8th around the pitstop phase, and the energy advantage he retained after the pitstop allowed him to not only consolidate his position but push on even further.
He was actually fifth at the chequered flag but a final move on Dan Ticktum proved slightly too robust, so a small time penalty relegated him to seventh.
Still, it was a very effective performance – and the manner of his drive turned out to be neatly prescient for what followed a day later, when Mortara completed a Mahindra one-two in qualifying and finished Sunday's race on the podium.
Nato ends on a high
When the season finale exploded into life in the final few laps, claiming various point-scoring casualties in and around the top 10, it presented a clear opportunity for anyone who could keep it clean and be poised to pounce.
Nato was one such driver. Having started towards the back of the field, Nato made little progress from his 19th place grid position for much of the race, as he focused on an extreme energy-saving tactic - building a surplus of more than 5% versus the grid’s median.
By the time he opted to engage ATTACK MODE in the final third of the E-Prix he had moved just one position forward. But that ATTACK MODE timing was absolutely perfect to capitalise on the drama that engulfed the championship battle and massively impacted the lower reaches of the top 10.
Nato gained eight of his nine positions in that phase of the race, and was already on the move in the midfield when a multi-car collision vaulted him to 11th. The last seconds of his ATTACK MODE helped move him into ninth and though team-mate Oliver Rowland's late double ATTACK MODE burst meant the Nissans swapped positions again, this race still ended with Nato snatching a very unlikely point.
Though this has not been a grand season to remember for the championship returnee, he at least ensured it ended on a relative high with just his fourth points finish of the year.
Buemi wins overall
But it was Sebastien Buemi, together with race engineer Connor Summerville, who topped the final leaderboard for the season – pipping Lucas di Grassi and Markus Michelberger by just two places having gained 89 positions over the 17 races this year.
As Buemi leaves Envision Racing after this season, his Formula E future is unknown. The 2015/16 champion has been one of the grid’s most impressive stalwarts with 14 wins, 36 podiums and 1,172 points scored and that experience and class has been at the centre of a strong season.
Buemi has been in the points 11 times out of 17, exemplified by two final flourishes in London where he turned 10th place on the grid in both races to fourth and fifth at the finish.
