Dan Ticktum had never been up the Goodwood Hillclimb until last week, where he found himself behind the wheel of the newest generation of Formula E race car: the GEN4.
Making its public debut, the all-electric race car was a huge hit with the crowds at the annual motorsport event, as the championship partnered with Goodwood to showcase the innovation and upgrades the cars had seen from GEN1 until the current GEN3 EVO specification.

“Insurmountable levels of fun this week,” Ticktum said after his final Sunday shootout run. The Brit managed a time of 42.46s, just half a second off the best time set by Goodwood and Hillclimb legend Romain Dumas in a Ford Super Mustang Mach-E.
“I was pretty surprised at how fast the GEN4 was, but shrink everything down to a track like this, and add a load of bumps and it was quite mind-blowing the first time I went up there,” Ticktum continued. “Through the last couple of days I have just had to chip away at it and I got pretty close, I would say, to certainly my limit.

“The conditions of the track changed pretty much every time I got in the car. A lot of the time we didn’t know what we were going to expect! Turn 2 was very dusty again, unfortunately, and as was the top of the hill. So I had a big moment, which is a shame because on a clean track I think we could have done the 41.6s time.
“A bit disappointed with that but for a car that is obviously built for circuits, and not a hillclimb, and me in my first time here, I am happy with how quickly I got up to speed and I don't think there's that much left on the table.
“The whole Spark team has been fantastic. We made a few changes through the days and found a bit of time. The team have built a fantastic car and Jeff [Dodds, Formula E CEO] and his team have done something quite remarkable here with the jump from GEN3 to this so hopefully we will be back next year and give it another go.
“I tried my best to make everybody proud, hope I have.”
When will the GEN4 be racing?
Fans will have to wait a few months to see this GEN4 car racing, with the season opener in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia across 18 & 19 December 2026.
