Formula E returns to Sanya
For longtime Formula E fans, a familiar race makes its return: Sanya. Having last raced at this Chinese tropical resort city in the 2018/19 season, the race makes a welcome return for Round 11 of the calendar.
When we last raced here, it was Formula E veteran Jean-Eric Vergne who came out on top (ahead of fellow Formula E champions Antonio Felix da Costa and Oliver Rowland), in a race that was not without incident. Multiple crashes, as well as mechanical difficulties, saw a staggering nine cars retire from the E-Prix.
With only eight drivers on the current grid having raced here before, this is a race you’re not going to want to miss.

Tokyo night race
After joining the roster in 2024, Tokyo quickly became one of the jewels in the Formula E calendar, renowned for delivering exciting racing in the midst of changeable weather conditions. And this year, Tokyo returns as a spectacular night race, with both races of the double-header starting at 20:00 local time, making it the first time the all-electric series has raced after dark on the streets of Japan.
In last year’s event, history was made when a Japanese team (Nissan) secured their first ever win on home soil, thanks to Oliver Rowland’s victory in Round 9 - a key step in his path to the 2024/25 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship title.
A two horse race
In the teams’ and manufacturers’ standings it’s shaping up to be a titanic battle between two Formula E heavyweights: Porsche and Jaguar.
Both squads have rarely put a foot wrong this year and have racked up a staggering 208 points (in the case of Jaguar TCS Racing) and 184 points (Porsche). As it stands, Jaguar look to have the upper hand, with a race victory and two podiums in Berlin and Monaco granting them a points advantage. Meanwhile, Porsche have struggled in recent rounds, coming away from Monaco with only eight points between their two drivers.

However, with a difference of only 24 points between the British and German manufacturers, momentum could quickly change.

Influenced by this year’s theme, ‘The Rivals – Epic Racing Duels’, Formula E will showcase over a decade of electric evolution, through a landmark display featuring every generation of Formula E car, from GEN1 through to the all-new GEN4.
This will be the first time that fans can get up close and personal with the race car that will accelerate Formula E into a brand new era of electric racing, and marks an exciting addition to Formula E’s 2026 schedule.
Further announcements regarding driver lineups, guest appearances, and specific activation schedules will be released in the coming weeks.
Who will be crowned champion?
In true Formula E style, this year’s championship battle has proved impossible to call, with four drivers leading the way at the top of the standings, and less than 30 points between them.
Following a pointless start to the season, Mitch Evans now leads the way, with a 19 point buffer to reigning Formula E champion Oliver Rowland - who heads into Sanya off the back of his first victory of the season in Monaco.

In hot pursuit of the leading pair is Edoardo Mortara and Pascal Wehrlein. Having led the championship for much of the season, Wehrlein struggled in Berlin and Monaco, scoring in only one of the four rounds. This dropped the German driver from 1st to 4th in the title fight, but with just under half of the season still to play out, there’s still plenty of time for things to change.
