Dan Ticktum was best of the rest for CUPRA KIRO in the first Free Practice session for the 2026 CUPRA Raval Madrid E-Prix. It’s a huge race for the team, especially with their other driver Pepe Martí being the only Spanish driver on the grid, as the support a special CUPRA livery this weekend.
Ticktum recovered from a close moment in the gravel in the final moments of the session to set a time two-tenths clear of the grid. Next best was Nyck de Vries, who caused an early red flag after a crash at the chicane and was forced to limp back to the pits. After worrying about the car’s steering on the Mahindra Racing machine, he was able to make his way back to the garage and was sent back on his way to end the day P2.
Maximilian Guenther finished third for DS PENKSE, with his teammate Taylor Barnard fifth after the 40 minute session. Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein was fourth in between the two DS PENSKEs.
As it happened…
The session began at 16:30 local time, with mixed conditions around the circuit. Light rain had been falling for the last hour, but it wasn’t enough to impact running and cars were instantly out on track to set times.
Things came to a halt when Nyck de Vries crashed with the chicane at the end of his lap, immediately bringing out red flags. Thankfully the Season 7 Champ was unharmed, but the incident did cause damage to his front wing and steering on the Mahindra Racing machine. De Vries was able to reverse and head back to the garage, albeit without a front wing attached.
There was a close call later in the session for his teammate, Edoardo Mortara, who almost made a similar mistake and locked up ahead of the final sequence of turns. Thankfully he was able to abort and escape the same fate, but it will be a key focus point for race day tomorrow.
Dan Ticktum took a trip through the gravel with seven minutes of the session left, but that didn’t stop him from setting a rapid lap moments later to go over half a second clear of the field so far with a 1m29.403s. That ended up being the best time of the day, with nobody being able to beat him.
Next best was de Vries, who went back on track after his incident to finish second and two-tenths off Ticktum’s time. They were followed by the DS PENSKE of Maximilian Guenther, with Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein and Taylor Barnard for DS PENSKE fourth and fifth.
